Description

After Silas dies, the lights turn off and the amulet glows and tells Emily to become the new stonekeeper and accept its power, which she does against Navin's wishes. The robots place Silas in a "sleep chamber" and locate Karen with a computer that shows them where the monster, an Arachnopod, currently is. While en route to Kanalis, Emily worries very much about Karen. Emily appears to sit at her mother's bedside constantly. Morrie tells Emily that he feels a strange presence in the room like it is not just him, Emily, and Karen there. He ends up leaving after Emily claims she can't feel it. The Voice then appears to Emily and tells her that she should've slain Elf Prince Trellis while she had the chance. Her stone warns her that a battle will follow soon and that the elf horde will stop at nothing to kill her. While the Stonekeepers mostly benefit from keeping one, it isn't rare that they may lose control and ultimately become unbalanced. In one particular incident, several Stonekeepers were possessed by their stones and transformed into colossal beasts, which subsequently wreaked havoc on Alledia. In Book Two: The Stonekeeper’s Curse (p. 99), Leon Redbeard and Emily discuss the choices she is facing. Discuss what Leon means when he says, “You must believe that you are here by choice and not by circumstance…You must…take control of your life and the stone will follow.” What might Leon’s implications entail? After David Hayes died in a car accident, his widow, Karen, and their children, Emily and Navin, move to a house in the town of Norlen, as Karen can no longer afford to live in the house she owned with David. The house, which has been in her family for years, is large and needs care and attention. As they clean the house, Emily finds a strange amulet in the library where her great-grandfather, Silas Charnon, worked, and puts it on. That night, Karen is kidnapped by a monstrous "arachnopod".

Riva is first seen in book 6, where she rescues Navin and his crew from a swarm of Shadows. Her family's reputation is mixed; her father did build the underground haven, but Riva mentions that her family had "traits which, I hope, I did not inherit." Besides, 30 years earlier before the series, other stonekeepers fought to keep them at bay and were eventually able to successfully defeat them. One stonekeeper— a mild and quiet young male elf from a small village— was kept in detainment in hopes of him returning to normal. However, the boy told them that they should have rather killed him and that they would regret their decision. One night, the stone returned to help the boy escape and he used his mystic stone powers to destroy the cell. The guards that were assigned to watch over him were killed including Leon Redbeard's father. The young elf eventually transformed into the Elf King, the evil beloved ruler/lord of Gulfen.
