Description

Run times in steady modes, just like the outputs, have gone up from those on the 2019 light. The flashing modes have paid the price here, though – while their outputs stay the say, their runtimes have dropped a little. The default settings are listed in the Test Report below, but VLS means you can change the output of the 750 and 120-lumen constant modes and the three flash modes, Flash 1 (100 lumens), Steady Flash (200 lumens) and Day Flash (400 lumens). You can set these to anywhere between 20 and 750 lumens, by doing this: You can tweak the lumen output using Moon's VLS – Variable Lumen System – giving you a fully customisable setup that you can tweak for high performance or battery saving. You can find all of our top-rated options in BikeRadar’s guide to the best mountain bike lights. Also tested

The Vortex Pro is quite a small unit compared with a lot of the lights on the market today, especially those that boast an output of 900 lumens, as the Vortex Pro does in its Boost mode. Despite the Moon Meteor Storm Pro feeling much brighter than its claimed lumen output, the beam’s pattern is especially focused even when it’s operating in the mixed beam mode.

The button itself is easy to find, with its grippy rubber sitting proud above the light's shell. Mount-tastic As with the Pro, it does work to a degree, cutting off the upper light a bit, but there is still plenty heading up into the trees.

All the lights chosen have a minimum output of a claimed 1,500 lumens, but some are much brighter. Generally, more lumens equates to a higher price. The rubber shims for fine-tuning the bar fit don’t have any grooves, so tend to splay outwards as the clamp is tightened and look untidy, although this doesn’t affect clamp performance and the light proved to be very stable over rough terrain. The unit’s USB-C port doubles up as its charging and remote plug, and the two-button remote fastens to the bar with a Velcro strap and has a 33cm long cable. The forward projection is far enough away to not have a noticeable cut-off point, while peripheral illumination has a gradual fade, rather than a defined line between light and dark. You press and hold the button for a few seconds to swap from steady to flash, and then you have another four flashing modes plus an SOS setting. You also get a wired remote control which connects to the light via the USB-C charging port. I've found that being able to change modes while keeping your hands on the hoods makes life a lot easier. I use the Ravemen PR1600 on my winter road bike, and being able to switch between dipped/high beam easily when interacting with oncoming traffic is great. It even suffers minor vibrations on rough roads – nothing significant, though. Obviously, the upside of this tool-free mount is the simplicity of moving it between bikes. There's a helmet mount available separately, should you prefer. Controlling the light is no different to many others, with just a single button for operation, which also displays mode and battery life. In the day flash setting you'll get 45hrs out of the light. That's easily enough for all the riding I can do for nearly a month. It's perfect for training rides when the sun never really comes up.In addition to the 1000 lumen Boost mode, there are two more steady modes – 700 lumens and 100 lumens – plus three flashing, one of which is a daylight flash. There's also an SOS mode, which is designated for emergencies only. The Moon Vortex Series is perfect for on road cycling and commuting with a improved Lumen output and new button control system. The upgraded Vortex Pro has an impressive max output of 1300 Lumens, is waterproof and recharges with a USB-C cable. Key Stats:
