Or the efforts she made to infiltrate the local mums’ social groups and when she embarrassingly forgot her own new-born baby’s name! This book is subtitled “Diary of a Confused Mum”, and this truly is an account of the reality of becoming a parent, in all its bewildering, messy and downright daft detail. If you are looking for tips on how to be a great, amazing, perfect parent then dear reader this book is not for you. I’ve always thought this was a creepy idea, so I loved Lucy’s comment – ‘Nice quote, but you’d die if that happened, Liz’.

It is hilarious, contains some great recipes and will make you smile remembering your family friends. When I first heard about the book, I will be honest and say that Lucy’s name didn’t immediately ring a bell to me but the book sounded great. I give Drinking Custard Diary Of A Confused Mum By Lucy Beaumont (With interruptions from Jon Richardson) a Five out of Five paw rating. I'm not overly familiar with Beaumont as I don't necessarily enjoy most Radio 4 comedy, and this was a light-hearted read with one or two memorable anecdotes and a fair bit of filler. Or the efforts she made to infiltrate the local mums' social groups and when she embarrassingly forgot her own new-born baby's name!

She admits that she knows she’s being silly and wants her baby to be grounded, to enjoy avocados but also go to greasy spoon cafes.

I do like Lucy and Jon as a couple (heard them on Parenting Hell etc) but I didn’t feel that his interruptions were required. Publishers, authors, blog tour organisers kindly entrust me with books, in-exchange of an honest review. From when Lucy was hospitalised with indigestion in her third trimester (blame the burrito), to when she was *this close* to slapping her hypnobirthing instructor, to fi nding herself drinking a whole pint of custard in one sitting. There are some serious moments too, about hormones, the changes within her body whilst being pregnant and the challenges of those night feeds. The book opens with a chapter entitled “My life as a normal, single human being before everything changed”, which has some childhood memories (which actually continue throughout the book), involving gazebos and other memorable moments. Lucy Beaumont is a fabulous and witty narrator of her story – I was going to say guide, but she is clear that this book isn’t full of parenting tips and is much more about entertainment, Good, I say – most of the parenting books I did try out of desperation when my children were tiny were no help and laughter would have been better anyway! I think this quite sums it up: “ it was good to know the type of mother I was going to be - angry and impulsive, messy but loving.
