I'm tempted to say more, but I won't as I can't do justice in a review to what's covered in the book. I found this book to be an amazing insight into the life of not only the people in the Special Forces but also their families and the sacrifices they make to support their loved ones. During his subsequent tours of the Middle East with the SEALs, Kyle became the deadliest sniper in American history, shooting well over one hundred alleged insurgents. Acts of war and human approach are nicely in balance, everything seems realistic, the main character is no dumb killing machine without any feelings, war is not "fun", etc. A long time ago when I was studying political science, I studied a mission that failed back in the '70's.

A SEAL who serves alongside Chris Kyle in Iraq, Ryan Job is an extremely likeable, funny man, and one of Kyle’s closest friends. By infusing a storyline into it, introducing murderous Iraqi characters (like "The Butcher" who kills children by drilling them), and peppering it with philosophical dialogue, Eastwood has tried to present a sympathetic view of Chris Kyle. On the other, he seems to have not pondered much the implications behind the war that he helped fight. The protagonist came across as a psycho, and it was not sure whether Clint was rooting for him, or showing us the futility of his battle. Cooper also took twice-daily lessons with a vocal coach, and spent many hours studying footage of Chris Kyle. The British and Israelis have to do the same thing, Iraqi, Palestinian and Afghani insurgents aren't required to justify their killings.

The book gave a much more in-depth look at Chris' time on deployments and being of military background that was more of what I wanted to know about. The themes which are repeated again and again - his addiction to video games, the comic book heroes he tries to emulate, his simple pleasure at shooting a human being - presents the picture of a kid who have never really grown up. Some of Kyle's descriptions fascinated me with his direct honesty while others repulsed me with his cavalier attitude/descriptions. Ventura successfully sued Kyle for nearly 2 million dollars, and subsequent copies of the memoir omitted the passage in question. This book made me sad - both for the Americans who were killed or maimed, and for the people who are killed and maimed by the Americans.

I got this as a christmas gift from my Aunt Eileen so I figured why not step out of my book zone and try it? It had its world premiere on November 11, 2014, at the American Film Institute Festival, followed by a limited theatrical release in the United States on December 25, 2014.
