Unlike other open-style seats on this list, the Tyke Toter’s handlebar is integrated into the seat itself, so those little hands always have a place to land. The placement of the handlebars is close to the child’s seat, however, making the child sit more upright since they aren’t stretching to reach the handlebars. A favorable difference Lauren recognized almost immediately was the fact that she did not have to bow her legs out as much as she pedaled. This was especially useful during the uphill portions of her ride. With the Shotgun Pro seat sitting higher than other mountain bike kids seats, it gives parents more room to pedal. While this is not a huge performance issue and has never limited Lauren in her riding with other seats, she sure enjoyed the extra space for her legs. The top tube-mounted bike seats are attached to the tube that is between the seat post and the head tube on your bike. This seat won't work with step-through frames. Although on my mountain bike it’s not an issue as I can sit taller. Her weight is arguably well placed in that it’s between the wheels; much better than behind the rear wheel as on other styles of seats.

Going frame or stem mounted is a matter of personal preference. Parents with short arms and small frames (or pregnancy bumps) will probably gravitate to a stem mounted seat, and they are popular around town options. In the images below you can see how the child’s helmet is close to Carrie’s chin, but falls a few inches lower on Brian’s chin. (And realistically, this is Carrie’s bike and Brian could actually sit a bit higher than this on his own bike, increasing that space even more.) With a child this size, the Shotgun Pro is still a fine fit for Brian, but not as much for Carrie. We vigorously examine the seats’ safety features, the ease of mounting, the potential impact on balance while riding, and the comfort of the child during use. We also note whether the seats could potentially impact visibility or overall riding safety. Finally, we confirm the weight and measurements of the product. Front bike seats are extremely common as a means of transporting small children in the Netherlands and Denmark. And as for being scary, well let’s just say it didn’t take her long to start taking her hands off and waving at people. Where can the Shotgun go?NOTE: To eliminate any potential confusion, the second grooved spacer in the picture below is for the Mac Ride, which we left on to facilitate comparisons between the seats for this review. The Thule Yepp Nexxt Mini is one of the most popular bike seats on the market. It’s a comfortable rear-mounted seat that’s perfect for short or long journeys, and we love that both parent and child can remain comfortable and happy on 1-2 hour long cycle rides. Foot peg Settings: The Original Shotgun has only one setting for the foot pegs where kids rest their feet. The 2.0 has two settings so that the foot pegs can be adjusted lower as your child grows.

Some of these open-style seats are particularly suitable for mountain biking families. These seats usually come without a harness, so your child is not strapped in. Seat name But often parents don’t know what they don’t know, and if you’ve never used another bike seat, you might think the iBert seems like a solid, affordable choice. The Shotgun is only compatible on bikes with front suspension forks, so it won’t work on most cruisers. The granting of a best price is not combinable with other promotions (e.g. "free articles) from Bike-Discount. The footrests on the Do Little, Shotgun, and Mac Ride all extend down from the seat mount and rest of the sides of the down tube. The Mac Ride and the Shotgun also have rubberized straps that can be adjusted to fit closely against the child’s foot. This seat fits normal stems with a diameter of 20-28 mm (0.78-1.1 inches) and ahead stems with a diameter of 28.6 mm (1.125 inches).

Headset (Total Spacer Height): In our testing, we discovered that the total number and the total height of the spacers under your stem will also impact fit. Once the Shotgun Pro spacer is installed, there must be clearance between the Shotgun Pro’s front clamp and your stem when the handlebars rotate. Safety features are limited but include a two-point belt that fastens around the waist and non-adjustable foot straps. With any child bike seat, if you fall or crash, your child is coming crashing along with you. However, there are safety benefits of different styles of front mounted seats.Don’t just assume that the factory setting is the best setting. Depending on your child’s size and your size, you’ll need to play around with the best fit for you. Have you considered an e-bike with a rear bike seat for carrying your baby, toddler or small child? We’ll help you find the right set up so you can easily carry your child, up to 5 or 6 years old, on your electric bike. She also enjoyed the stylish mini grom bike seat! It is truly is the new and improved seat from Shotgun. It is still padded and plush, but with a new sleek design. In addition, the seat angle was effortless to adjust. This is another adjustment you need to make before hitting your favorite trails. Since the original seat was launched in 2017 the Kids Ride Shotgun brand have seen a big increase in the use of e-MTBs around the world and a large amount of mountain biking families wanting to fit the Shotgun child seat to high-end carbon fibre mountain bikes. Read more All of the seats we listed above will work for casual riding, but the Tyke Toter and the UrRider are specifically designed for only casual riding. Both seats are bulkier and include integrated handlebars for the child. On the flip side, they are easy to mount and are more affordable.

Open-style child bike seats were originally designed and created for mountain bikers. The main benefits of mountain bike child seats are that they place the child lower on the frame and more centered on the bike as opposed to traditional front and rear-mounted seats. As a result, the additional weight of the child is much more in-line with the adult rider, making the bike and the child feel more stable, especially on more aggressive terrain. The Original Shotgun has a super plush and comfy saddle. The 2.0 saddle is flatter and less padded, but does have a more traditional MTB swagger to it.This seat places your child in between your arms and legs so that, even though they’re technically sitting on their own and have to maintain their balance, your body is offering them some sort of protection and support. It’s incredibly fun for both parent and child, with the close proximity allowing you to have a fully fledged conversation (or singing session) with them. Initial installation requires you to replace 10 mm of spacers on your headset with the Shotgun Pro spacer ring. Of course this means you’ll have to remove the stem and handlebars from the steerer. Not the most convenient thing in the world, but you’ll only have to do this once. The best thing about this seat is that you really get to cuddle your child as you cycle along - and for this reason the Little Explorer's predecessor, the Oxford Leco has been a firm favourite of ours.
