When He Reached Down His Hand for Me" was previously recorded by Cash for his 1962 album Hymns from the Heart.Dark as a Dungeon" was previously recorded by Cash as the B-side to his 1964 single "Understand Your Man". His power rested in his voice, a uniquely sonorous monotone, pitched somewhere between singing and speaking. Bob Dylan famously remarked that Cash could "turn words into bone", an ability you hear to its fullest extent on the fourth CD, My Mother's Hymn Book, a selection of aged gospel songs that is almost too striking for its own good. These songs inhabit a brutal world of sin, stoical suffering, death and redemption. The starkness of their message is mirrored in the starkness of Cash's solo presentation and the overall effect is slightly overwhelming in its intensity. It is stunning, but having listened to it once, you struggle to imagine the circumstances in which you would listen to it again. When the Roll Is Called Up Yonder" was previously recorded by Cash for his 1975 album Johnny Cash Sings Precious Memories. Niet alles is even geslaagd, overigens. In the Sweet By-and-By" was previously recorded by Cash for his 1975 album Sings Precious Memories.

Disc 4: 4.0 stars. The Hymns his mother learned him. A look at the true Johnny Cash. He considered this the best album of his career. Interesting but the casual listener might have difficulties to listen to it until the end. For die-hard fans. Devil's Right Hand" was previously recorded by Cash with the Highwaymen for the 1995 album The Road Goes on Forever. Let the Lower Lights Be Burning" was previously recorded by Cash for his 1962 album Hymns from the Heart. Father and Son" was previously recorded by Cash as "Father and Daughter" for his 1974 album The Junkie and the Juicehead Minus Me.

If We Never Meet Again This Side of Heaven" was previously recorded by Cash for his 1962 album Hymns from the Heart. National Guard troops march on anti-war protesters at Kent State University on 4 May 1970; four students were killed. Photograph: Time Life Pictures/Getty Images As Long as the Grass Shall Grow" was previously recorded by Cash for his 1964 album Bitter Tears: Ballads of the American Indian. Although the images used on the standalone CD depict Cash near the end of his life, most of the recordings on My Mother's Hymn Book actually date to Cash's early sessions for American in 1993–1994 (hence the fact they only feature Cash performing by himself).

But by the time Cash played the Nixon White House in April 1970, he had changed his views. In the song Route #1, Box 144, he made clear that his foremost concern was American families risking and losing the lives of their boys to the war. And in What Is Truth, he defended the “lonely voice of youth” that questioned a war in which so many Americans were dying and to which they might next be called to fight. When Cash played What Is Truth at the White House, the newscaster Dan Rather reported that “it seemed to surprise the president a bit”. The first three discs feature outtakes and alternate versions of songs recorded for American Recordings, American II: Unchained, American III: Solitary Man and American IV: The Man Comes Around. The fourth disc, My Mother's Hymn Book, features gospel songs Cash first learned from his mother as a child and was later reissued as a standalone album in 2004. The final disc is a best-of distillation of the first four American albums. As a result this is something of a warts-and-all affair, with less polish than might otherwise be expected - particularly on the opening disc, Who's Gonna Cry, which is dedicated to just Cash and his guitar. Ultimately, of course, this material doesn't quite hit the high standards of the actual American series albums, because if these songs had been that good they'd have been on the albums and the album cuts would be in here. On top of that, the full My Mother's Hymn Book on disc 4 is neat but of course is available separately from this, and disc 5 - presenting a "Best of" the American series - is utterly pointless, since there's no good reason anybody should be dipping into this set who hasn't already got American I-IV. Disc 5: 4.5 stars for the CD but 1.0 for the idea of including it in the box set. This is a best of his recordings at American. It is obvious to me that if you buy this box set, it is because you liked, and already owned, the American albums. Then why including it here ??? Disc 1: 3.0 stars. This is the weakest volume of all 5 discs. It is, understandably, left-overs from the albums Cash recorded at American.

My Mother's Hymn Book is a collection of Christian spiritual songs and hymns that Cash originally learned from his mother while growing up. The album features only Cash's voice and a single acoustic guitar. This disc was released as a stand-alone disc the following year (his 89th overall album) under the same title, and peaked at #9 on the Christian music album chart. In the album's liner notes Cash mentions that this is his favorite album he ever made. Many of the songs Cash recorded during the American sessions were updated versions of songs he had previously recorded. I'm Moving On" was previously recorded by Cash in 1984 as a duet with Waylon Jennings. This version would not be released until 2014 on Out Among the Stars.
