Despite being an irregular set of dots placed on a small, low-resolution screen, the digital pet embodied a microcosm, pulsating and breathing, forming an immediate bond with its owner. Depending on the player’s attention, Tamagotchi would go through several different stages of growth. The game would start with it hatching from an egg and entering into its ‘baby stage.’ Born with its ‘hunger’ and ‘happiness’ meters depleted, the pet would frequently beep to reclaim the owner’s attention, needy for food and games. It helped that Yokoi was an animal lover. At various points, he had kept dogs, cats, a parrot, beetles, a chameleon, owls, and, yes, a turtle. He also happened to be responsible for coming up with new handheld games. Like most toy fads, Tamagotchi enjoyed a surge of popularity before being eclipsed by the next hottest thing. In this case, it was Furby, the talking animatronic creature that could “learn” English and speak Furbish with other Furbys. Best of all, parents didn’t need to worry about Furbys dropping dead ... at least not in the normal course of play. When they were told not to bring them to school anymore, kids started tasking their parents with taking care of their virtual pets during the day. Sooner or later, though, someone would forget to feed the little beast or clean up its droppings. Or it might die of old age—in Tamagotchi’s case, that could mean less than a month, though some Japanese versions were known to live up to three months. And that’s when the Tamagotchi would beep no more.

There are no on-screen icons, and therefore all information is conveyed through the screen and buttons. The character is cared for by filling its meters; they have Affection and Happy meters, each consisting of four units, which are both empty at the start. The Affection meter decreases by one unit per hour, and the Happy meter decreases by one every 50 minutes. If either becomes empty, the character will call for attention to fill them. In this twisted human-technology interrelation, Tamagotchis taught us to gamify life in a way we usually only see in video games or movies, bringing it to a deeper dimension. The fact that every Tamagotchi was different, with its own name and unique features, and the fact that its evolution was the result of our intervention in its growth process as digital beings, turned us into God-like creatures, giving us the final call in its ‘life or death.’ For example, if a Marutchi child is well taken care of, it will evolve into a well-behaved teen, Tamatchi. If it is not, it will evolve into the trouble-making adolescent, Kuchitamatchi. Once in their adult stage, Tamagotchis may also marry and produce babies. Eventually, these digital pets will become seniors, retire, and die.But to Kocurek, there’s no reason that play can’t include elements of grief, loss or other complicated emotions. “Children experience a huge range of human emotions,” Kocurek points out. “I think sometimes we forget that they're people, and they're not just simple and happy all the time. They actually have complex emotional lives, just like everyone else.”

We’ll start with all the Original Tamagotchi options, which are best if nostalgia is what you’re after. Then we’ll get into some special edition Tamas which are themed around various popular TV shows and characters. Lastly, we’ll explore the latest editions of Tamagotchi, which provide many cool features and much more to do, thanks to modern technology. They were so intensely attached to their digital animals that some users started neglecting their non-digital lives. The needy, pixelated creatures always had to come first: before sports, friends, homework, and classes. Distraction turned into addiction. In the second release of the Tamagotchi—due to widespread complaints—Bandai decided to introduce a pause button. The origin story has an apocryphal quality. Was the advertisement selling turtles? Vacations? Did it exist at all? “No matter where I look I cannot find what the TV commercial was about or even if there was such [a] commercial in the first place,” one Redditor complained just a year ago. And today, many kids who grew up with Tamagotchi want to introduce their kids to the wonders of being a Tama parent (and maybe indulge in a bit of nostalgia along the way!)

Today, many of the ‘90s kids who were once scolded for surreptitiously tending their Tamagotchi during class are rediscovering their nostalgia for the toy’s unique gameplay and endlessly collectible variations. To date, Japanese toy company Bandai has released more than 60 additional Tamagotchi toys, games and apps, including collaborations with franchises such as Pac-Man, Pokémon and Godzilla. In 2017, the original Tamagotchi was relaunched on the 20th anniversary of its original U.S. release. And 2021 has seen multiple new Tamagotchi drops, including a Tamagotchi smartwatch that launched in Japan in June and the Tamagotchi Pix, a camera-equipped handheld device with a color screen that arrived in North America in July. Yokoi and Maita were also following the lead set by Petz, a series of personal computer games created by a company called PF Magic in 1995. In Petz, players could interact with a dog or cat that would actually run and play across a person’s desktop. But unlike Tamagotchi, Petz couldn’t go on the road with their owners, and they didn’t have to cross the rainbow bridge. Petz and Walter’s tortoises were early examples of virtual caregiving, but Tamagotchi took it to a whole new level. If the user continues care of a toy without severe neglect, the toy will stay for 24 hours before evolving into another toy.

Dani Bunda is an active member of Tamagotchi Facebook groups, where she helps fellow fans price their collections and spot scams.Customers also like that the Pix is a little easier to take care of than the ‘90s originals. You can even get kids to leave it with a babysitter when they are busy with school or extracurriculars! The Toy Story Tamagotchi's release date falls 8 days ahead of the United States release of the film Lightyear, a spin-off film in the Toy Story franchise that outlines the origins of the Space Ranger that the Buzz Lightyear action figure was modeled after. It was designed in promotion for the Japanese release of the same film, which falls 6 days ahead of the Toy Story Tamagotchi's own release date.
