Description

The cards in both versions of the game all have icons representing their value in acquiring other cards, movement and/or combat. The publishers ( Renegade Game Studios) have cheekily retained the same movement and combat icons in Clank! in Space that they used in the original Clank! The rule book may describe the swords as ‘laser swords’ but they look rather more like medieval shortswords than lightsabres. We may not know of any new Expeditions, but Renegade Game Studios and Dire Wolf Digital have given us a glimpse of what 2019 has in store: Clank! Legacy: Acquisitions Incorporated. This new expansion will introduce “legacy-style gameplay” to the Clank! system as players progress from amateur dungeon explorers to the leaders of powerful corporations.

Every time a player makes noise using a Clank card, they’ll add 1 colored cube of their color to the Clank area of the board. If you’re sneaky enough, you may be able to remove some of your tokens from the area. Actions Cards that generate gold (the coins, notthe blue skill currency) are easy to undervalue because gold has limited use in the game. It's also easy to underestimate the value of killing monsters that drop a lot of gold. However, having easy access to gold is a great way to gain some powerful items from the market and give yourself a little points boost at the end of the game. If you’re already a Clank! expert, then jump straight over to our review of Clank! Sunken Treasures, and Clank! The Mummy’s Curse. The game’s title comes from its tense noise mechanic, which sees players generate noise as they make their way through the teetering piles of gold and jewels. Over time, Clank cubes are added to the board, eventually triggered by a card that activates the dragon’s rage. If more loot has been stolen, the dragon’s ire is greater, increasing the risk of damage to the players. Before you start playing, you need to set-up the board. You can choose either the beginner’s dungeon or the more advanced dungeon on the flip side of the board. You then assign tokens representing artifacts, hidden secrets and a couple of other valuable items to their places, which are all clearly marked on the board and labelled in the rule book. The number of artifacts changes slightly with the number of players to keep the games competitive. If you die in the subterranean levels or without an artifact, you’re completely dead. You lose all your points. If you ‘die’ above ground, helpful villagers will save you! You’ll keep the points you’ve gained so far, but you won’t get the 20 point bonus given to any player who gets out unscathed. Skill, represented by a number in a blue diamond, is the main currency in Clank! It’s used to buy cards from the Dungeon Row and the Reserve which have a cost in their top right corner. When you buy a card from the Dungeon Row, it is only replaced by a new one at the end of the turn. Any cards you buy go straight to your discard pile, though some cards have an ‘Acquire’ effect that activates immediately. Arrive Choice. These new cards present options to all of the players when they arrive in the dungeon row. Sometimes it will be a choice of spending gold for a benefit which you can refuse or sometimes it will be a choice between two options, at which point every player must choose one of the options but they don’t have to be the same as each other. It’s My Party And I Will Bring Unique Powers If I Want To You can try and plan out where you want to go but you won’t be able to see exactly what treasures are where. You will, however, know that the further you go into the dungeon, the better the loot. Clank! sees its heroes venturing into the dark depths of the dragon Nictotraxian’s subterranean dungeon. Nictotraxian is the most dangerous creature in the realm, but the opportunity to steal her treasure is too tempting to pass up!

When you’re looting a dragon’s lair it’s probably a good idea to move silently. Of course, that’s not always easy. If you like Clank!, you’ll certainly like Clank! in Space. The gameplay differences are slight so you probably don’t need both versions, but many Clank! fans won’t let that stop them from buying this one too. Some cards also cause you to stumble or otherwise make a sound (Clank!, geddit?). These require you to contribute a cube of your colour into what will eventually be a ‘boss bag’ from which cubes are drawn to dish out damage. In the original Clank!, the bag represented the dragon whose treasure horde was being robbed by the players; in Clank! in Space, the bag represents ‘Lord Eradikus’– who is essentially the dragon in all but name. All in all, the components are excellent, especially considering the game’s moderate price point. So, how does the game play out? One of the most noticeable ways that Clank! gets ahold of players is surprisingly a metaphor for the gameplay itself. The game design is unassuming, a thiefly shadow that slips in without appearing impressive. Gameplay is straightforward, almost routine. And then finally, a mad dash to escape raises the tension, and walking away from the table players will realize how much fun they had, despite the stumbles along the way.

Note: The official solo version of Clank! uses a mobile app. The rules detailed below have been created by fans of the game. It uses 9 extra cards instead of the mobile app. Designed by Paul Dennen. Published by Dire Wolf Digital. For 2-4 players (there is an expansion for up to 6 players). Clank Catacombs. The winner of the game will be the player with the most points from treasure and cards when all is said and done. The end of the game is triggered as one player leaves the dungeon (either through death or a successful escape). At this point there is a countdown of four turns, with any players left in the dungeon after this point instantly killed by the monster’s range. You are getting so much in this expansion that the best way to describe it is like a party in a box. Players will compete to steal loot from a dragon’s keep, while the dragon, in turn, will become increasingly annoyed and try to kill the players. One area shows the actions the second player will take on its turn. The second area is used for the card number and decision icon. If a player hits 10 damage, one of two things happen. If they’re in the subterranean part of the dungeon, below the grassline, they die in the dragon’s jaws. This means they’re out of the game and get no points. If a player is above ground, however, daring villagers manage to save you and you can keep all the points you’ve gained up to that point. The end of the game

All players then add up points from their artifacts, items and dungeon cards. The player with the highest score wins! But if all players were killed without gaining points, everyone loses and Nictotraxian reigns smugly until your next game night. Clank! – The VerdictThe cluttered looking modular board in Clank! in Space represents Lord Eradikus’ space ship. Players will use their movement cards to traverse the ship, collecting tokens and credits for their special effects or victory point value, and buying cards, some of which also give victory points. Players have to seize whatever loot and artefacts they can get and then make their way off the ship, because if they still in the main part of the ship when the game ends then they lose, regardless of how many victory points they have otherwise accumulated. Thoughts on Clank! in Space You’ll take all of the Clank tiles on the board and put them in the dragon bag. Shake that bad boy up and draw tiles equal to the number of tiles shown on the dragon rage section of the board. Each cube drawn is one damage against that player. All of the cards, except monsters and starter cards, have a skill cost that you have to pay to acquire them, and many of these cards are also worth points at the end of the game. The game art is also well done, and because it takes a more thievery approach to the dungeon delving fantasy adventure theme, it stands out. The graphic design is clear and engaging. Overall, it’s friendly and uncomplicated.
