Raum has a tendency to dare his enemies “which bespoke a degree of confidence in himself to which he had no right”.

Also, I feel slightly rewarded for holding out on reading the original publication as I knew it would eventually find its way into a future book or collection; I just didn’t expect it to be so soon and also to be expanded. Kepler sees and feels himself rotting away as he reads decades-old newspapers, so maybe finding that precious coin will cure what ails him. THE WATCH HOUSE by Bernie McGill is the story of the modern world arriving on Rathlin, a remote Irish island, at the very end of the nineteenth century, with dramatic consequences for a young woman named Nuala. Hannah Beckerman, Observer * You've heard the old proverb about ambition, that it's like setting a ladder to the sky. Then, in The Furies, Parker is charged with bringing about the end of a serious case of blackmail against the widow of a deceased Mafia man. Meanwhile, Lyle Pantuff and Gilman Veale stay at Braycott Arms, a “shithole” hotel suitable for their ilk. BOOKS TO DIE FOR, which he edited with Declan Burke, was the winner of the 2013 Anthony, Agatha and Macavity awards for Best Non-Fiction work.

Connolly is a master at combining the thriller with the supernatural, creating stories that are guaranteed to keep the chills coming while gluing the reader to the page. It had been a while since I read one of John Connolly’s Charlie Parker series, so when I spotted this book I bought it on a whim. This one is actually two short books and both of them concentrate more on Parker's investigative efforts, with only a small amount of the occult.

It adds to the experience to hold this thick hardcover and when opening the book for the first time, feeling that I’m in for a great couple of hours. The first, The Sisters Strange, involves the theft of rare coins: Charlie is hired to keep a watchful eye on Dolors Strange, who may be tangled up with one of the thieves. This book should be named "Cases resolving by themselves", because Parker has absolutely nothing to do with solving them.
