Maya gets caught by the school faking assignments, but isn't expelled because she is the valedictorian. When she doesn't show to their tutoring session, Adam visits Maya's home. He discovers that her family is struggling financially, and she is embarrassed and angry about his unannounced visit. Once Maya realises he doesn't care, she continues tutoring him. He comes to her part-time job to correct his homework, and she invites him to cook something there as a reward. But, when Maya tastes what he made, it is far too spicy, which shows Adam the medication is negatively affecting his tastebuds. Director Thor Freudenthal was reviewing advance copies of books two years ago when he found one that immediately “stood out.” The book was author Julia Walton’s soon-to-be published young adult novel Words on Bathroom Walls (Random House), a story centered on a teenager named Adam coming to terms with his schizophrenia diagnosis.

An elaborate look into Adam’s schizophrenic mind. The reading experience is extraordinary. It was hilarious, heartbreaking and yet once again, very eye-opening.A brutal, beautiful book that sits right beside The Perks of Being a Wallflowerand I’ll Give You the Sun.”—Jennifer Longo, author of Up to This Pointe

She loves avocados, sushi, her mom’s meatloaf, and her grandma’s marinara sauce. If she’s going out to lunch, her go-to meal is a tuna melt on sourdough with sweet potato fries.I’ve experienced some of the side effects. Headaches mostly. The kind that sort of nest in your brain and throb for a while until they get bored and leave you alone. I don’t feel compelled to act out everything that runs through my mind, which is nice. But it doesn’t make the visions go away. I still see things I know I shouldn’t be seeing. The difference is that I know I shouldn’t be seeing them. Freudenthal’s film isn’t afraid to showcase the rollercoaster of Adam’s emotions and symptoms, as well as remind the audience that young adults struggling with mental illness deserve just as much sympathy and humanity as others. In one moment of the film, Adam says that teens with cancer are shown more compassion and patience. But for those with schizophrenia, “people can’t wait to make you someone else’s problems,” he says. “No one wants to grant our wishes.” The blunt statement was intentional, Freudenthal explains.

N'Duka, Amanda (February 22, 2018). "LD Entertainment Adapting Julia Walton's Book 'Words On Bathroom Walls'; Thor Freudenthal To Direct". Deadline Hollywood . Retrieved June 24, 2020. Adam’s parents are the most amazing thing. Oftentimes stepparents are demonized, but Adam’s stepdad is an important part of his life and not evil. His parents are very involved with Adam’s life. Parents are often caricatures in YA but these ones were developed characters who were flawed yet so supportive of Adam. I loved them so much. In two weeks, I start my junior year at St. Agatha’s. It’s a K–12 school. My mom and Paul made the staff aware of my “condition,” and because it’s Catholic, they can’t exactly turn me away. That would be pretty hypocritical. From what I know about the guy, Jesus wouldn’t turn me away.

She eats candy (Cadbury please) and the occasional, generous scoop of Nutella (Costco size only) in her pantry while her kids are distracted. He says, “The next time we encounter someone with the illness, [I hope] we encounter them as a human first… seeing everyone as equal and seeing people as sort of suffering from an illness other than being the illness, that’s we wanted to leave audience members with.” Paul also made sure that my new school knows not to talk about my illness. As a lawyer, he explained that legally they aren’t allowed to tell anyone what I have, which I appreciate.

I have a brother who has paranoia schizophrenia and he was diagnosed in his mid 20’s. We’ve had our ups and downs since so this book hit home for me. i133257502 |b1100050401915 |dmvmg |gn |m230215 |h4 |x1 |t0 |i4 |j18 |k201108 |n12-14-2021 16:57 |o- |aREALISTI FIC WAL When she started crying, I wished the bats had been real. That the creepy little bastards had eaten me in the chemistry lab and I’d never had to see the way my mom looked at me in that moment: like I was crazy. aAdam has just been diagnosed with schizophrenia. He sees and hears people who aren't there: Rebecca, a beautiful girl who understands him; the Mob Boss, who harasses him; and Jason, the naked guy who's unfailingly polite. It should be easy to separate the real from the not real, but Adam can't. Still, there's hope. As Adam starts fresh at a new school, he begins a drug trial that helps him ignore his visions. Suddenly everything seems possible, even love. When he meets Maya, a fiercely intelligent girl, he desperately wants to be the great guy that she thinks he is. But then the miracle drug begins to fail, and Adam will do anything to keep Maya from discovering his secret. i also liked how the situation with todd (adam’s childhood best friend) was incorporated because it shows how much stigma is attached to people who have schizophrenia & how anyone who has it is automatically deemed “violent” or a risk to themselves & everyone around them which is not true. (i want to clarify i didn’t enjoy reading that event, but i appreciated the perspective because it reflects real life judgements)I still see things I know I shouldn’t be seeing. The difference is that I know I shouldn’t be seeing them.” McNary, Dave (May 11, 2018). "Andy Garcia, Walton Goggins, Molly Parker Join Drama 'Words on Bathroom Walls' ". variety.com . Retrieved September 11, 2018. Adam goes to a catholic school. I don’t think I’ve ever read a YA book where the main character attends catholic school? And it’s not like a couple lines, catholic school is a main part of the book that is examined and talked about in depth. I will say that this book doesn’t have a super positive outlook on Christianity (being agnostic this was a plus for me). While the points brought up are completely valid, if you don’t want to hear any criticism of Christianity, this might not be the book for you.
