I take the point re: notes etc but I can understand why the group would want to make a book of just these pictures, given that they were taken during a relatively happy time for them, their last good times as a 4-piece. The remastered vinyl is the original album but comes with a download code to the extra tracks on CD 1 (ie the B-sides) but not, it seems, the music on CD 2. Another Manics reissue means another presentation, as this will come as a 120-page A4 book with unseen images by Mitch Ikeda, many personally annotated by Nicky Wire and original typed and handwritten lyrics from the bands own archive.

Vocals and cymbals sound great, so there's that to enjoy, and unlike Hagstrom, I didn't notice any unwanted distortion anywhere. In summary, while boxes have certainly been ticked, and it appears to do what it should, the band seem to have treated Gold Against the Soul rather poorly with this reissue. I was therefore keenly anticipating the follow-up and didn’t have to wait very long as the Dave Eringa-produced Gold Against The Soul arrived about 18 months after the first album and delivered three great singles in ‘From Despair To Where’, ‘La Tristesse Durera (Scream to a Sigh)’ and ‘Roses in the Hospital’ (as well as the ‘Life Becoming A Landslide’ EP). We haven’t always been the most complementary about this album in the past, but with hindsight it was a strange and curious record with many fan’s favourites on it.We don’t share your credit card details with third-party sellers, and we don’t sell your information to others. So we just phoned Dave up and said 'Look, come down, let's see how this works out', and everyone loved what we were doing, so we decided to stay with him. Among more favourable reviews, Stuart Maconie of Select praised the album as "a mammoth development even from their excellent debut" and "almost without exception terrific", [22] while Melody Maker remarked that the band had "stayed beautiful".

However, with the band's more beefed up, arena-friendly sound emerging in subsequent years, this album is no longer so at odds with the general Manics aesthetic. When I found that demo and played it to James, he was shocked as well at how it fitted in with our later post-punk ideas. For the deluxe reissue coming in June, Wire promised that fans would enjoy a deep-dive into the treasure trove of B-sides and never-heard-before demos. In 2013, "La Tristesse Durera (Scream to a Sigh)" was chosen by Clash as one of their favourite Manic Street Preachers singles.

No doubt the 1993 audio could have done with a EQ tweak here and there, but this is way beyond that. The latter publication, in a retrospective review of The Holy Bible, looked back on Gold Against the Soul as "an underrated pop-metal effort that's armed with a handful of bona-fide big tunes", and cited " La Tristesse Durera (Scream to a Sigh)" as its highlight. The ‘Gold Against The Soul’ reissue will be available as a 120-page A4 book featuring unseen images from the bands’ long time photographic collaborator Mitch Ikeda, many personally annotated by Nicky Wire and original typed and handwritten lyrics from the band’s own archive. All lyrics are written by Richey Edwards and Nicky Wire; all music is composed by James Dean Bradfield and Sean Moore No.

The remastering is credited to frontman James Dean Bradfield and Matt Colton, from Metropolis Studios. It felt like we were gorging on a lot of American rock in particular, whereas [seminal 1994 album] ‘The Holy Bible’ was all our British influences and new wave. there are moments where it feels a little flat and yes, it is all highs and mids, so the low end which suffers.

No essays, no attempt to place the album in context, no annotation from any of the band to explain whey they haven’t “always been the most complementary about this album in the past”. The reissue ends with more remixes of ‘Roses in the Hospital’ then anyone really needs but omits the seven-inch version of that same single. This was one of the most obvious hints at what would be Richey Edward's lasting legacy: a sadness and loneliness which was to cripple him to the point of despair.
