The storyline in this revolved around the frozen Charlotte dolls, and Sophie’s increasingly strange cousins. I would even go as far as to say it was one of my favourite horror stories and I would highly recommend it. In this extract from the book we join Sophie as she first steps off the ferry onto the Isle of Skye and meets her Uncle James and cousins Piper, Cameron and Lilas. Now "Frozen Charlotte Dolls" is all what I google about, it turns out you can find a lot of creepy stories and articles about these dolls, no joke, I found it super interesting.

I have to start by saying this because this book is all about creepy little dolls and it really freaked me out. Sophie is the main character of the book and the tragedy that strikes her friend Jay after messing around with a Ouija board app is what spurs her onto finding the ghost of her dead cousin. This was such a genuinely creepy YA horror, I loved that there were some really scary moments in there that weren't watered down for a teen audience. The main character started this adventure so she'd find out what exactly happened when her best friend died and I don't feel like she did. But they left something behind…Sophie arrives at the old schoolhouse to spend the summer with her cousins.

I will suggest that to my other niece, who is loving locked room mysteries right now and is reviewing a classic Christie here next Friday. She’s determined to find out more about the incidents that keep occurring and why her Uncle’s house is plagued with bad luck.

Overall, there were enough twists to make it an engaging little read that, most importantly, did send shivers down my spine a few times. Overall, this was a decent, engaging light horror, with a very creepy storyline and yes, although the characters were a bit flat, the creepy setting and dolls definitely make up for it. However things aren't as it seems when she arrives, there Cameron who is always in a mood and who had has been burnt hands, little Lillias who has a major fear of bones and then Piper who seems too good to be true. Helpful hint for frozencharlotte12: My wife used to read the real scary books in the bathtub (fully clothed) because then nothing could sneak up behind her.I don’t read much horror either (I’m more of a psychological thriller kinda girl) but I really enjoyed this one! Even Sophie eventually forgot that she found it suspicious and just moved on to the mysteries with her cousins and the Frozen Charlotte dolls. The Ninth Circle came out in April 2008 with possibly the most beautiful cover ever created (matched only by her second book, Jasmyn).

I loved that the book didn’t shy away from modern day technologies and that when Sophie and Jay did an Ouija board it was through an app on Jay’s phone. This is fantastic horror writing and everything is perfect, from the feelings of the characters to the isolated setting. I picked this one up for my amazing niece (youngest of the two by 12 minutes) while I was visiting her in Sydney.

However things take a turn for the worse when Sophie starts hearing voices, the appearance of creepy frozen charlotte dolls and the fact that Lillie claims that Sophie wasn't the only person to arrive at the house (that Sophie dead cousin has followed her to the house). The dolls are speaking to her, luring her, but she tells Sophie she has to ignore them, she can't listen to the dolls because they tell her to do bad things. Whilst she tries to find the cause of Jay’s death, a series of events will happen that will change her life forever.
