Description

The stories in Memory Wall show us how we figure the world, and show Anthony Doerr to be a master of the form. The truth is that the substrate of old memories is located not inside the cells but in the extracellular space. I am a huge fan of The Shell Collector, so was a bit worried when I started reading this collection. In ‘The River Nemunas’, a teenaged orphan moves from Kansas to Lithuania, and discovers a world in which myth becomes real.

And more, AD manages to blend the ordinary with the extraordinary experiences of being alive and blends them seamlessly. Acclaimed author Doerr (The Shell Collector) is equally at home in long and short form, as his numerous O. Anthony Doerr has won prizes and plaudits in his native America for his painstaking, luminous fiction: he has a scientist's eye, a lyrical sensibility and an impressively global canvas. And if that seems impossibly lofty — these stories are very difficult to talk about without sounding grandiose or woolly-headed — it’s also winningly blunt. It's fair to say that Anthony Doerr is doing things with the short story that have rarely been attempted and seldom achieved. You have to begin to lose your memory, if only in bits and pieces, to realize that memory is what makes our lives. Memory Wall takes place on four continents and addresses issues from Alzheimer’s in South Africa to infertility in Wyoming to fishing for endangered sturgeon in Lithuania. Anthony Doerr has won numerous prizes for his fiction, including the Pulitzer Prize and the Carnegie Medal.

The processor chip maker also noted that certain applications have become less efficient as processors continue to evolve – something known as the Von Neumann bottleneck effect. The stories are magical in that they each contain something not-quite-of-this world: a memory machine, an epileptic ability to connect across time and space, an impossible sturgeon. I have never read writing quite like this, especially in two of the stories, Memory Wall and Afterworld. Henry Prizes and has been anthologized in The Best American Short Stories, The Anchor Book of New American Short Stories, and The Scribner Anthology of Contemporary Fiction.

On a half-page ripped from a brochure, one phrase is shakily and repeatedly underlined: Memories are located not inside the cells but in the extracellular space.
