Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD) – this is a chronic inflammation of the intestines which causes ongoing diarrhoea. If you are giving your dog metronidazole to remedy diarrhea, be sure to provide lots of fresh water to prevent the dog from becoming dehydrated. Other than the fact that dogs are dogs and not humans, it's also the size of your pet that matters when considering human meds for dogs. Pancreatitis – this is inflammation of the pancreas (an organ that helps with digestion), which results in diarrhoea, vomiting and severe pain in the front of the abdomen. In addition, there should be a limit to using hydrocortisone creams. You should keep an eye out for side effects like behavior changes, weakness, and nausea.

It's one of the safer human meds for dogs out there, but studies show that continuous use makes it less effective with time. Any medication or substance that is ingested by or injected into your dog has the potential to cause an allergic reaction or even anaphylaxis, but thankfully this is incredibly rare. Sucralfate is a very safe medication because it isn’t absorbed into your dog’s system from the intestine. However, it can occasionally cause constipation, vomiting, or diarrhea, and it may interfere with digestion (and therefore absorption of nutrients) if given excessively. Boil 1 cup of white rice in 4 cups of water for 10 to 30 minutes (maybe longer) until the water turns a creamy white color. Remove the liquid and allow it to cool. Save the cooked rice for later use. Once cooled, give it to your dog as often as they will consume it. f) Has your dog been around multiple other pets — including in your own home — and are those pets similarly affected? It’s always best to use hydrocortisone products that have been developed for dogs rather than using human alternatives that may include toxic additives.

Causes

After a 24-hour fast, start feeding your dog small frequent portions of a bland diet to gently get their guts used to food again. d) What is your pet’s regular diet? This includes their dog food, treats (including human table food), and any other supplements. Take a photo of the bag and ingredient list if you can. Note: You should never give Claritin to your dog if they’re pregnant or if they are suffering from liver disease. Some breeds of dogs (e.g., Collies, Sheepdogs, and Collie- or Sheepdog-cross breeds) are more sensitive to loperamide than others. This is typically due to a specific genetic mutation (MDR1) that makes them less able to tolerate high doses of loperamide. Your veterinarian will advise you on the safety of loperamide use in your dog.

Anti-diarrheal agents, de-wormers, and/or probiotics (bacteria that support intestinal health) may be prescribed. There are several probiotic products that may be helpful in dogs with diarrhea. As the quality and effectiveness of these products are not always known, consult your veterinarian before offering anything to your dog. Many cases of acute diarrhea respond quite readily to this conservative treatment, allowing the body's healing mechanisms to correct the problem, without the initial cause ever being established. As the stools return to normal, your dog’s regular diet can usually be transitioned from the prescribed veterinary diet over seven to ten days. Diagnostic Testing: Depending on what your vet is finding during the course of the history taking (this is why knowing the above characteristics about small intestinal diarrhea versus large is beneficial) and physical examination, they may well be recommending certain diagnostic tests to help “rule in” or “rule out” potential underlying causes. Metronidazole (also known by the brand names Flagyl, Metizol, Protostat, Metrogel) is a strong antibiotic primarily used as an antidiarrheal to treat inflammation of the large intestine. It’s also used for other illnesses and conditions in dogs, cats, and horses, as well as to treat bacterial infections in humans. It is often prescribed in combination with other antibiotics.

Before you even try this drug, remember that there are other alternatives to Dramamine you can use that have fewer to no side effects including herbal treatments and behavioral conditioning, as well as specific dog anxiety meds and tools like anxiety vests. Metronidazole is often used in combination with other antibiotics to improve its spectrum of activity, which is especially useful in cases where multiple bacterial species are identified. Once your dog is passing solid poos you can slowly reintroduce their normal food over three to five days. VetIQ Stool Firm 45 Tablets have been specially formulated with a unique blend of Pectin and Pumpkin which help to increase stool firmness in both dogs and puppies over the age of 8 weeks. If your dog isn’t old, very young or poorly in themselves, fasting them for 24 hours can help speed up their recovery.

Treatments: Some pets and some conditions require little to no treatment beyond a “bland diet” and “passage of time” to resolve the diarrhea. However, many cases and most that go on for greater than 24–48 hours need some treatment. What’s best, what’s safe, and what’s likely to be most effective will best be determined by the results of the history, physical exam, and diagnostic testing.Gastrointestinal tract infections, such as those with Clostridium difficile (“C. diff”) and Giardia Metronidazole works by destroying and preventing the creation of DNA in the infecting organisms. Unlike most other drugs, metronidazole is able to treat central nervous system infections by penetrating the blood-brain barrier. Remember: Buffered Aspirin administered under vet supervision may still cause side effects like kidney damage or internal bleeding. With that said, do not give your dog catnip cat toys. This can result in choking or a potential intestinal obstruction. The nature of the diarrhea, such as its color, consistency, smell, and frequency, is important in determining the cause. Your veterinarian will usually request a sample of fresh fecal material be brought to your appointment. You may also be asked to provide answers to a series of questions. To help you prepare this information for your veterinarian, see the handout "Diarrhea Questionnaire for Dogs".
