Description

Bottling of The Glenlivet took place at a Chivas Brothers bottling plant at Newbridge just outside Edinburgh, [6] but that plant was sold at the end of 2009 with bottling to be transferred to other Chivas Brothers plants. [9] Today, the distillery is owned by the Chivas Brothers subsidiary of the French alcoholic beverages company Pernod Ricard, which also oversees the distillery's production of 5,900,000 proof litres per annum. [3] [4] The majority of this – enough for 6 million bottles – is sold as The Glenlivet single malt, with the remainder being used in Pernod Ricard's blended whisky brands. Smith began production in Upper Drumin, on the land he leased from his landlord the Duke of Gordon, and exactly 25 years later a second distillery was opened to meet rising demand. The Cairngorm-Delnabo Distillery, as it was called, proved unable to quell demand even with production output doubled, and construction began on a final larger distillery which would centralize the work and consolidate the operation.

After you read this article, we will have explored all the essential variations between these Speyside whiskies until eventually deciding which is one is right for you. Glenlivet vs Glenfiddich The Glenfiddich 12 single malt scotch whisky is a characteristically sweet whisky. Its unique flavour profile boasts aromas of light fresh fruit, such as creamy pear notes and apple notes, as well as creamy butterscotch notes. These notes are crisp on the palate with a hint of spice that lingers. Upon further tasting, there are subtle hints of honey and malt that add to the complexity of this special whisky.

The Glenlivet 21yr Single Malt: two double golds, one gold, and one silver medal from the San Francisco World Spirits Competition between 2007 and 2010 and scores of 94 and 93 from the Beverage Testing Institute between 2009 and 2010.Comparing Glenlivet vs Glenfiddich will eventually boil down to personal preference, in which the flavours of both Glenlivet and Glenfiddich will play a huge role. When pairing Glenlivet 12 with scallops, its delicate nutty notes work in harmony to accentuate the sweetness of the shellfish. The creamy caramel undertones also bring out the softness of flavour often found in scallops. This whisky’s fresh finish adds another layer to each bite, heightening its sweetness and further complimenting the succulent flavours of the dish.

A warm tropical fruit accompanied by caramel, strawberries, oak and sherry lift effortlessly out of the glass and bring with them subtle notes of malt and cocoa that reminds me of malted milk balls like Whoppers. A bit of melon and a sweet syrupy quality that reminds of Tiger’s Blood sno-cones. Baking spices and hints of sweet tobacco jump in and out adding a savory and earthy dimension to an already complex aroma. A pour of the 21 Year Old takes on a copper cast in the glass. The nose had a cake-like, fruity character, with a current of musty air washing over it. The flavor develops those qualities substantially, coming out as baked pears smothered in honey, touched up with vanilla, ginger and golden raisins. This fades fast on the finish, winding down first to hay before finally settling on a faint trace of oak. It’s a smooth, balanced, cultured dram, and well worth it at the price point offered (see below). On the other hand, The Glenlivet offers pleasant nutty notes and creamy caramel undertones which make it ideal for pairing with sweet seafood dishes such as scallops. While these flavours are pleasant enough in their own right, I think they’re slightly overshadowed by The Glenfiddich’s intense aromas and complexity. The main product range from the distillery is The Glenlivet range of single malt scotch whisky, but whisky from the distillery is also used in the production of Pernod Ricard's other brands, including Chivas Regal and Royal Salute whisky brands. [8] Glenlivet is categorised as a Speyside distillery. As of 2016, The Glenlivet range consists of 14 whiskies. [7]
