Description

The Scallywag whisky portfolio includes various expressions, each with its own unique profile. The core expression is a no-age-statement whisky that is non-chill-filtered and bottled at a strength of 46% ABV, striking a balance between robust flavour and approachability. This expression is a true representation of the range's overall style, offering a harmonious blend of sweetness, spiciness, and rich fruitiness. It’s here and it’s fun: Scallywag The Chocolate Edition 2023 Chocolate: not just a good whisky pairing We may sell, license, transfer, assign or in any other way dispose of the Service (including Members) to any third party without any notification to you, e.g. (but without limitation) in connection with any reorganization, restructuring, merger or sale, or other transfer of assets.

Gather a bunch of great Speyside single malts, blend them together, and you’d be going through the same process Douglas Lang did to create Scallywag Whisky. A blended malt like the rest of their Remarkable Regional Malts, this whisky is the embodiment of the essence of the region the malts are collected from. No partnership, joint venture, agency, or employment relationship is created as a result of your use of the Service.Whiskybase B.V. is the Dutch private limited liability company, having its statutory seat in Rotterdam, The Netherlands and its office at Zwaanshals 530, 3035 KS Rotterdam, The Netherlands. Brings to mind a wet dog shaking himself dry in the living room. While there is not a tremendous amount of depth to the dram overall, there is something amusing about it. No doubt, there is a certain level of charm in the presentation. Let’s be honest. Who among us can resist a dog grinning to reveal a single remaining front tooth while wearing a monocle? Malt and sherry work to make this an interesting little dram that’s malty, fruity and… well I’ll let DL tell you the rest in the pre-review quote below.

Without prejudice to the section Liability below, the Service may be temporarily unavailable during maintenance, updates, etc. We shall make reasonable efforts to inform you of any unavailability due to maintenance or updates. Not bad. The Scallywag Whisky is a pleasant blend of Speyside malts and it brings with it a nice fruity essence. The char and cocoa give it a bit of complexity, but it doesn’t lend itself to having a fully rich character. It’s a whisky I could easily sip on while cleaning or puttering around the apartment but not something I’d reach for on the regular. If it weren’t for the price I’d say it’s a great starter scotch. If any provision of these Terms is held invalid, the remainder of the Terms shall continue in full force and effect. Scallywag is a Small Batch bottling created using only the finest Speyside Malts including, amongst others, spirit distilled at Mortlach, Macallan and Glenrothes Distilleries. Bottled at 46% alcohol strength and proudly non chill-filtered, Scallywag embodies all that is Speyside Malt Scotch Whisky – beautifully sherried, richly spiced and truly charming. The Douglas Laing company is known for its "Remarkable Regional Malts" range, and Scallywag fits snugly into this collection, representing Speyside. Like its siblings from other Scottish regions, Scallywag is created to express the quintessential qualities of its region's malts, and it does so with both quality and a sense of fun. Whiskybase B.V. (“Whiskybase”, “we” or “us”, company details below) offers a whisky enthusiasts online platform that provides its members access to the most comprehensive, transparent and trusted resource of whisky bottles and allows and stimulates its members to contribute information about whisky bottles to the platform (“Service”). By using the Service, and by creating an account you represent, warrant and confirm that you are of legal age. Collectors and whisky enthusiasts often look to Scallywag for its limited releases, which are highly sought after. These releases are not only collectable due to their limited nature but are also valued for their distinct flavour profiles that offer a deeper exploration into the Speyside malt character.

Additionally, the Speyside designation on the label indicates to the consumer that all of the single malts involved in the process were distilled in the Speyside region. Specifically, the distilleries of Mortlach, Macallan, Dailuaine, Inchgower, and Glenrothes are named as contributing to the blend. Ex-sherry butts and ex-bourbon hogsheads are used in the maturation process. Douglas Laing & Company presents Scallywag without the addition of coloration or the use of chill filtration. Tasting Notes: Scallywag by Douglas Laing & Co Five years ago, Douglas Laing realised that by selecting certain Pedro Ximénez and oloroso sherry casks and pairing them together, it could seriously ramp up the richer, more chocolatey elements of the blend and so The Chocolate Edition was born. Launched on World Chocolate Day (it’s Friday, 7 July, get it in your diary), the series has grown in popularity over the years, going from a 300-bottle first run in 2018 to 4,200 bottles in this year’s edition, its sixth annual release. That doesn’t mean it can’t have a bit of fun though. Which is good, because whisky is fun. At its core, that’s what it’s all about. Having a drink with your mates is a good time. Tasting new flavours is exhilarating. Getting geeky about the production is rewarding. We’re whisky nerds because we love it. Beyond the core expression, Douglas Laing has released several limited editions and age-statement variations of Scallywag, including cask-strength versions and special vattings that emphasise different aspects of the Speyside character. Some of these special editions might highlight the influence of sherry casks more prominently, while others could explore the nuanced flavours that come from a particular vintage or cask type. The Scallywag range is a distinctive line of blended malt Scotch whiskies from Douglas Laing, a renowned independent bottler based in Scotland. This family-owned company has built a sterling reputation over the years for producing high-quality Scotch whiskies, and the Scallywag range is a prime example of their dedication to craftsmanship and character. You are responsible for all activities through your account. Nose: Buttery sweet initially. Sherry makes itself apparent as the nose opens up in the glass after a few minutes. Light flashes of wet, green oak late. Scallywag's consistent quality and delightful branding have earned it recognition and awards in the whisky industry. It has been praised for its drinkability, with experts noting its well-balanced palate that makes it an excellent choice for both newcomers to Scotch whisky and seasoned aficionados. Palate: Viscous without being cloying or too sweet, the palate opens with a big dusting of cacao powder and a nuttiness that reminds me of Nutella. Then there’s orange oil, burnt brown sugar, prune, raspberry, and vanilla. Spanish Sherry butts care for this spirit as it matures, naturally imparting the distinctly dark, rich colour. Inspired by a long line of Douglas Laing family Fox Terriers, the Scallywag name and endearing canine character are most fitting for this richly spiced and deliciously sweet Speyside Malt Scotch Whisky. Scott Morrison, Douglas Laing’s brand manager, says the brand has a lot of fun striving for chocolate perfection, and you can tell. Like every year, the Chocolate Edition is bottled at a high alcohol strength (48% ABV) without colouring or chill-filtration. Unique to the 2023 release is a hand-drawn illustration from Douglas Laing’s head of creative, Claire Coetzee. But never mind all that, what you really want to know is how it tastes, and especially if you’ve never tried this whisky before, does it taste really of chocolate? Well, I’m glad you asked… Scallywag The Chocolate Edition 2023 tasting note: We’re currently delivering to the following countries including Australia, China, Japan, Malaysia, New Zealand (16 of 17 regions), Singapore, South Korea, Taiwan, Thailand, Turkey, & United States (20 of 62 states inc Alaska, California, Connecticut, Florida, Idaho, Louisiana, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Nebraska, New Jersey, New York, Rhode Island, Texas, Vermont, Virginia, Washington DC, & Wyoming).
