Do What They Say or Else. Translated by Christopher Beach and Carrie Noland. University of Nebraska Press. 2022. ISBN 978-1-4962-2800-0.

Nevertheless, it is an accurate portrayal of a certain slice of French life, and interesting for that alone. Ernaux's parents were simple folk, running a grocery store and café in the French countryside, sure of their lives and their roles and trying to make something better for their daughter. I have been confused with the type of relationship the author had with her father, especially in the initial part of this book. Did she actually love him or hate him? I know love is a complicated feeling that can't be explained by objective answers. Still, I felt that the author should have written that portion in a better way. I don't know whether the author was actually confused about her love towards her father due to the grief associated with her father's death or whether the central idea was lost in translation. Throughout the book I am reminded of my own father. I wonder if this type of writing promotes this convergence of remembrances. Or perhaps it was the similarities of their lifestyles. My father was taken out of school to work on his parent’s land at age 8; however, he lived at home until he married my mother. Il posto non è certo quello di lavoro, l’impiego, anche se la trasformazione sociale e le differenze di classe sono molto importanti in quest’opera.

The author also touches upon the inadequacy of language itself to convey our memories, our feelings. She reflects upon the deficiency of the language to portray the simple, ungraceful country life of father. The real personal experiences of life can’t be conveyed through language as words get falter when pushed to their very limits, so in a way language was the inadequacy of Ernaux like her father. It reminds me of Maurice Blanchot here who wrote extensively about language and literary theory. Perhaps it’s hard to assuage the wounds of hearts with words of reason.

A lesser writer would turn these experiences into misery memoirs, but Ernaux does not ask for our pity - or our admiration. It's clear from the start that she doesn't much care whether we like her or not, because she has no interest in herself as an individual entity. She is an emblematic daughter of emblematic French parents, part of an inevitable historical process, which includes breaking away. Her interest is in examining the breakage.... Ernaux is the betrayer and her father the betrayed: this is the narrative undertow that makes A Man's Place so lacerating.' In distinguished society, grief at the loss of a loved one is expressed through tears, silence and dignity. The social conventions observed by my mother, and for that matter the rest of the neighborhood, had nothing to do with dignity." Ernaux was previously married to Philippe Ernaux, with whom she has two sons. [40] The couple divorced in the early 1980s. [41] A lesser writer would turn these experiences into misery memoirs, but Ernaux does not ask for our pity – or our admiration. In this case, she chose her father, a simple hardworking man. The book starts with his death and then continues with the Ernaux’s grandfather’s life. After reading to the end, it seems that the book was written as a therapy for the author. She is obviously feeling guilty for distancing herself from her father while transitioning towards middle class.
