About this deal

myForest is not able to import multipolygons (at this stage) and as a result, users uploading shapefiles containing multipolygons may will encounter the issue where some items from within a shapefile will become visible when imported, however other aspects which would be expected do not become visible. To import mapping into myForest, you will need to provide shapefiles which contain single polygons only. For guidance on converting multi-polygons to single polygons, please refer to guidance produced by the software provider. In providing three different file formats for exporting, we have created a versatile tool, which can function with other programs. Based upon where you intend to use the file would influence the format you might export it as. Another key difference is that GeoJSON and KML both export as a single file, whereas Shapefiles are several files which you have to zip. For woodland holdings over 3ha, you can develop a plan using the Forestry Commission’s full Woodland Plan template, the Plan of Operations template, and your own maps. A grant is available to help fund the production of a woodland plan (Countryside Stewardship option PA3), where the full Forestry Commission template is used. In our Woods into Management Forestry Innovation Funds projects blog post we gave a brief introduction into those 17 successful projects.

The Woodland Management Focus Area Pilot is developing a methodology to locate currently unmanaged woodlands which have the lowest barriers to management with the aim to engage woodland owners and ultimately bring more woodlands into management. Responsive design, which means it fits the size of the screen you are using, making it easy to use with tablets and laptops. The UK Forestry Standard sets out the UK government’s approach to sustainable forestry and woodland management, including standards and requirements, regulations and monitoring, and reporting. It applies to all woodland and woodland operations, regardless of who owns or manages it. Why create a management plan? If you want to create a woodland plan, you should include all woodland on your property. How to produce your plan Forest Lab started as a simple idea; ‘wouldn’t it be good if myForest users could help researchers?’ This soon prompted a follow-up question; ‘how can researchers help myForest users with issues impacting their forests?’ This two-way exchange is the foundation of what has become Forest Lab.”Sylva Foundation and Forest Research are working in partnership to deliver Forest Lab, enabling myForest users to collect and share data from their woodlands to help support research. myForest users are responsible for about 9% of woodland area across the UK, therefore collectively are able to represent a wide range of woodland types, and to explore many different issues, at thousands of different locations across the country. We hope that as a result we will create a unique and powerful tool to capture important information and data about environmental change. How to take part? myForest supports users through regulation and good practice, making sustainable management and the creation of forests across Britain easier to achieve. The Wildfire Project aims to collect valuable information and data to help understand wildfire risk, which in turn will be used to assess and decrease wildfire risk for myForest users. Volunteers complete questionnaires and a wildlife fire risk assessment at regular intervals. Tree Growth Project Each question is matched to ecosystem services (e.g. carbon storage, habitat provision, flood alleviation, products and other public benefits) that each of the specified management actions are deemed to enhance. myForest is bringing the latest technology to people who manage and create our forests. myForest provides comprehensive online mapping, digital tools and the latest resources to sustainably manage, and create new forests around Britain.

Use the small woodland plan template (macro enabled) ( ODT, 160 KB) template for woodland of an area less than 10 hectares - this is to apply for a felling licence, but is not eligible for funding to prepare a woodland management plan through Countryside Stewardship. Both projections EPSG:4326 and EPSG:3857 use the WGS84 reference system (this is a standard approximation model of the Earth's surface. EPSG:4326 coordinates are unprojected, giving you exact locations on the WGS84 spheroid (the latitude/longitude degrees which you may be familiar with). EPSG:3857 coordinates are projected onto a flat plane. This projection type is the standard used by web maps because the projection works fairly evenly across the globe. EPSG:27700 is the OS projection. It gives a nice consistent view of the UK but it is not advisable to use this projection outside the UK. Felling Licence Online (FLO) is the Forestry Commission’s online felling licence application and management portal. This is a collaborative project between Forest Research and Sylva Foundation, an environmental and forestry charity. It is funded by the Defra Future Proofing Plant Health Programme. A woodland management plan gives land managers a structured way to plan and organise the sustainable management of woodland to a common industry standard.

News details

Following the devastating impacts of Storm Arwen, the second webinar 'An Introduction to Management Planning' was rearranged to allow us to answer queries regarding the impacts of Storm Arwen on woodland management along with guests from the Forestry Commission and Euro Forest. Further information on the remaining webinars can be found here: FREE Woods into Management Webinars – RDI Associates (ruraldevelopment.org.uk) Slide from webinar 1: Sustainable Woodland Management - how and why do woodlands benefit a plan submission proforma ( MS Word Document, 16.3 KB) if you’re receiving funding from the Countryside Stewardship scheme

The two-year project is supported by a core partnership with the Forestry Commission and the Woodland Trust, while the approach being taken is to work closely with practitioners to co-design the tools and services of the new platform. Some grant schemes ask land managers to have an approved management plan in place prior to making an application. As part of this support and advice, the Focus Area Pilot is running a series of ten webinars to help woodland owners understand the benefits of managing woodland and how to progress management of their woodlands. Seven webinar titles were decided with the remaining three to be determined by attendees’ interests. Dave Biggs, WoodMizer UK Woodland Management Focus Area Pilot - Reheat (renewable technologies) Ltd (re:heat) Forest Lab is a project within myForest which enables landowners and scientists to exchange information about woodlands. You can find the tool in the myForest Platform, a focused GIS software allowing woodland owners and managers to map, plan, and manage their woodlands. myForest • home (sylva.org.uk) Screenshot of the myForest Woodland Assessor
