Description

Kyle, Jon, and Michael’s cookbook isn’t just a novelty; this is really good stuff to add that extra dimension to your campaign. Jon Peterson is widely recognized as an authority on the history of games, best known as the author of Playing at the World, The Elusive Shift, and Game Wizards. Filled with seventy-plus mouth-watering recipes, from apps to desserts to drinks, to level-up your next adventure. NECA/WizKids, Games For Windows, Awesomeness TV, Hooters of America, Titan Publishing, Unsub Records, The Saturday Group and Universal Republic Music.

The minute I saw this gorgeous-looking, delightfully geeky cookbook, I knew I had to give it a look. Celebrate with delicious game-inspired recipes to feed your fantasy, fill your hearts, and swell your bellies. The recipes are fairly basic and not too inventive in themselves— the joy of the book comes from the DND world, not the actual recipes. I teach about the cultural importance of food in some of my classes so I actually found this really fun. What made the original such a magical artifact for me were the thoughtful and at times daring recipes by Adam Ried. While some collections hail from familiar, Earth-like locations such as Dragonlance’s wintry Solamnia and the vampire Strahd’s Eastern European-styled Barovia, others are quite a bit more exotic. So, the book has three elements to it: The visual style and artwork, the writing by the authors, and then the recipes themselves.

Of course, Flavors of the Multiverse has yet another narrative trick up its sleeve — a band of plucky adventurers who narrate their own culinary journey in a series of humorous journal entries scattered throughout the book.

The recipes in this book aren't divided by food type -- most cookbooks I've encountered divide dishes in the usual categories of appetizers, salads, breads, main dishes, desserts, drinks, etc. But for me, who does have a lot of cook books and has done a lot of cooking, it was kind of a letdown. Heroes’ Feast includes recipes for snacking, such as Elven Bread, Iron Rations, savory Hand Pies, and Orc Bacon, as well as hearty vegetarian, meaty, and fish mains, such as Amphail Braised Beef, Hommlet Golden Brown Roasted Turkey, Drow Mushroom Steaks, and Pan-Fried Knucklehead Trout—all which pair perfectly with a side of Otik’s famous fried spiced potatoes. However, if you're merely competent in the kitchen and are looking for some interesting foods, this book will do. Heroes’ Feast includes recipes for snacking, such as Bytopian Shepherd’s Bread, Iron Rations, savory Hand Pies, and Hogs in Bedrolls, as well as hearty vegetarian, meaty, and fish mains, such as Amphail Braised Beef, Hommlet Golden Brown Roasted Turkey, Drow Mushroom Steaks, and Moonshae Seafood Risotto.

Dungeons and Dragons fans have large imaginations, but this cookbook allows their creative juices to flow in the kitchen, too. No matter what realm you reside in, the recipes will have you feeling well prepared and equipped for your own culinary quest. The cookbook is divided into sections: Human Cuisine, Elven Cuisine, Halfling Cuisine, and Uncommon Cuisine. Sure, players don’t need to wear costumes or use props while playing, but the addition of such real-world elements makes the experience that much more fun. Why put out a bag of chips when you can prepare a batch of Halfling Oatmeal Sweet Nibbles (page 128)?
