This is the first time the genuine operational diary of a senior intelligence officer has ever been released. C. Masterman, the committee provided Liddell and his team with bogus intelligence to feed back to Germany via double agents who had been captured and 'turned'. He soon became a regular visitor to the Russian Tea Room where he met other members of the Right Club including Archibald Ramsay. Liddell marriage to Calypso Baring, the daughter of Lord Revelstoke was to cause him great unhappiness and it was dissolved in 1943 after she had deserted him for her American half-brother, leaving Liddell to fight a long battle for custody of their son and three daughters. He also claimed that Liddell was also a traitor and had been part of the Kim Philby, Guy Burgess, Donald Maclean and Anthony Blunt spy ring.

The 1944 article summarises what seems to have followed and as he became ‘…a civil engineer specialising in harbour construction. He had by then spent five months at the Slade School in 1943 and the piece was written after the unnamed Herald reporter encountered him in the Towner Art Gallery and discovered that – partly because finding German ‘doodlebugs’ (V1 flying bombs) ‘somewhat trying’ – he had moved to 4 Ivy Terrace Eastbourne and enrolled in Eastbourne Art School for the last three weeks of the 1944 summer term. He was obviously hoping he could trust these guys despite his concerns but that he was attracted to Blunt by his art background. Lieutenant-Colonel Guy Liddell, who first trained as a civilian engineer, was subsequently an officer in the Royal Engineers, a patent engineer and inventor, and lastly an amateur painter, only seriously taking up the last activity in 1942 at the age of 75. In the spring of 1938 he visited the USA and determined that both the military authorities and the FBI were "more than anxious to establish a liaison with us, which could cover not only Soviet, German and Italian activities, but also those of the Japanese".

BBC History MagazineWALLFLOWERS is the codename given to one of the Security Service's most treasured possessions, the daily journal dictated from August 1939 to June 1945 by MI5's Director of Counter Espionage, Guy Liddell, to his secretary, Margo Huggins.Like several other officers, including Dick White, who considered resigning over the intrusion, Liddell did not think the Labour Party’s appointing of a policeman showed good judgment. Fourth, if Attlee had really listened carefully to her, and found her arguments persuasive, he would hardly have allowed Liddell to continue on in MI5 without even an investigation, and to be promoted to Deputy Director-General as some kind of designate.

A brilliant intelligence officer at MI5, Guy Liddell’s reputation was damaged forever by one great failure: his deception by the Cambridge spies.I read Liddell’s diaries avidly but I found West’s editing too light and the Legacy book really helped me to understand Liddell better. The Radio Security Service had grown, under Liddell’s supervision, from an inter-service liaison committee known as the Wireless Board into a sophisticated cryptographic organisation that operated in tandem with Bletchley Park, concentrating on Abwehr communications, and enabling MI5 case officers to monitor the progress made by their double agents through the reports submitted by their enemy controllers to Berlin. He had been friendly with Burgess for many years, and when Burgess went, so too did whatever chances Liddell still had for the top job. Guy Maynard Liddell, CB, CBE, MC (8 November 1892 – 3 December 1958) was a British intelligence officer.
