But the experience was like eating too much sickly chocolate, only very briefly satisfying and making you feel you had better things to do with your time. Impossible to put down, this is a darkly brilliant novel that balances the heartbreak with the humour. Janet is dealing with an unimaginable loss whilst also being involved in a relationship that is full of coercive control, she’s a likeable character and I felt so sorry for her as I continued to read. Levin’s writing is stirringly evocative, perfectly framing the repetitive mediocrity of Janet’s life and her inner turmoil — and secret joy — as it takes its surprising turn. A deeply empathetic exploration of grief, loneliness, guilt, toxic relationships and forgiving oneself.

There is a huge focus of trauma in this book and how it affects you on a day to day basis, the way it was explored was just fabulous. I really enjoyed this novel, the second I've read from Charlotte Levin, who seems to have a real knack for writing flawed protagonists so that we are both horrified by their actions and rooting for them to come good. We look at the real depths that our sadness can take us to, and how it manifests so differently in all of us, but also how we don't only mourn for the dead.Janet finds herself caught up in a situation and can’t remember anything , then when she remembers , she is stuck in a lie , now I couldn’t find it within myself to dislike her for it . But when Janet is involved in a train crash and saves the life of a little girl, it seems like fate has come full circle to offer Janet another chance at both life and redemption. The emotional intelligence that underpins this novel is very impressive and I'll be reading more from Charlotte Levin before long, that's for sure. A genuine and honest story about love and loss, with a darkly funny streak that reminds us just how strange life really is. Then, Janet finds herself involved in a train crash and, recognizing the chance to do what she couldn’t all those years ago, she makes a decision.

When Janet finds herself involved in a train crash, she recognizes her chance to do what she couldn’t all those years ago.

As an abuse survivor reading this story was like stepping back into the life I broke free from and I appreciate the authentic way in which it was written. As news spreads of Janet’s actions, her story inspires everyone around her, and for the first time her life has purpose and the future is filled with hope.

Ruth Jones, author of Love Untold Heartrending and surprising, with an very believable protagonist, this is a tale of loss, grief, abuse and fractured relationships. After experiencing a terrible tragedy eleven years ago, Janet is living only in the most literal sense of the word. One evening, she’s had as much as she can take and she makes a break for it channelling her inner Thelma or Louise. Janet becomes involved in a train crash, and it appears she’s saved the life of Elizabeth, another little girl.Janet is famous overnight, and it might just be her way of getting out of her mundane, and somewhat claustrophobic life with Colin. She sees all this as deserved punishment for her part eleven years ago in a tragic accident which killed her only child, Claire. This was an extremely emotional and suspenseful read , I was genuinely fearful at times , I did also shed tears during this .
