About this deal

They didn’t like the idea the creatures were good and released it on video I remember in butchered version with a stupid ending.

Rotten Tomatoes, a review aggregator, reports 51% of 35 surveyed critics gave the film a positive review; the average rating was 5. This score is the track’s prominent element and positively screams early Elfman (it’s very similar to the Darkman compositions he’d kick out a year later) and covers the film almost wall-to-wall with bouncing and blaring melodies. While only 20 minutes longer in length than the theatrical cut, the director's cut of Nightbreed actually contains about 45 minutes of new footage, as some material from the theatrical version was cut out or replaced. Closer to the climax of Nightbreed, there's a new scene in which Rachel picks up Lori in a car to go find Boone, in the hopes he can save Midian. This is an extremely limited release, it was edited by Seraphim using the HD footage not previously available to the earlier versions of the Cabal Cut, but maintains the spirit and focus of the original. The song "Country Skin" is a country-and-western rendition of the Oingo Boingo song "Skin" (which appears on the 1990 album Dark at the End of the Tunnel), it was written by Elfman and performed by country singer Michael Stanton.

Really looking forward to the tv series to make me appreciate the movie even more than I do already. This director’s cut, despite not including the complete 159 minutes of Cabal Cut footage, is a superior film to the 102-minute theatrical release. In 2019, Trace Thurman of Bloody Disgusting wrote that the Nightbreed as depicted in the film "represent queerness, or any fill-in-the-blank ' Other' you can think of. This was originally available on VHS/Laser Disc, and then a bare-bones DVD in North America in 2002. The patchwork assembly magnifies issues with persistent energy levels and consistently dynamic imagery throughout the film.

The release date was pushed back several months and the two-and-a-half-hour-plus original cut was chiseled down to 102 minutes. A long-term member of the Screen Rant family, Michael looks forward to continuing on creating new content for the site for many more years to come.

Barker shot extra scenes over three days in Los Angeles in late 1989 which included additional scenes with David Cronenberg which expanded and clarified his character. The "Mad Monster Party" projection of the Cabal Cut led to a renewal of interest among fans, especially on the Internet. As far as I can tell, no fancy titles for this release, but it is very similar to Shout Factory’s limited edition. I finally watched the Director's Cut and it's still a messy film but damn it's still such a fun movie. The scene in which Lylesburg introduces the resurrected Boone to Baphomet is also longer, and there's a new scene where Lylesburg tries to stop Lori from looking for Boone inside Midian. The comic book continued to run past the end of the film, ultimately stretching to twenty-five issues before it was cancelled.

What he ended up doing was putting together a cut of the movie, drawing together elements from the workprint tapes and the US DVD into one cohesive and long narrative, using the second draft shooting scrip and the novel Cabal as a guide. This was my first time seeing a cut of the film closer to Clive Barkers intentions and it left me wanting more. He was interested in creating a "horror mythology from the ground up" and developing characters that would live on in sequels.

But Barker's most perverse touch is that he makes these creatures the good guys (no wonder the PR flacks were bamboozled). The director's cut makes the plot much easier to follow, and the character motivations easier to understand as a whole, while the theatrical cut seems to jump from scene to scene with little connective tissue. This is a celebratory piece that includes extensive discussion about Bradley, Ross, and Bamford’s pre- Nightbreed work, a number of production photos, and some HD outtake footage. Facts like these verify claims that the studio’s meddling hampered Barker’s creativity, because, even in this reconstructed form, Nightbreed still feels like a compromise.
