Description

This was a great popular success, running for nearly two years, and they collaborated again, moving to the Aldwych Theatre. They are presented here as brand-new transfers from original film elements in their original aspect ratio. As the sound era dawned, it was possible to create faithful screen adaptations of the farces, and ROOKERY NOOK (1930) ushered in a series that would be popular throughout the early and mid-thirties. The first in the Aldwych farce series was It Pays to Advertise, which ran for nearly 600 performances.

In Pinero's Dandy Dick, a rural dean succumbs to the temptation of gambling on the horses; in Travers's Plunder, two jewel thieves get away with robbery and manslaughter; and in Orton's Loot, police conspire with bank robbers to put the one innocent character behind bars.

The last of them, A Bit of a Test in 1933, ran for 142 performances, compared with runs of more than 400 performances for some of the earlier productions. Lynn and Hulbert are both hopeless at holding down jobs but get mixed up in some dodgy shares that threaten to throw the family into disgrace. Walls and Lynn would each make solo films as well, but their careers began to wind down in the late ’30s. After five years of extraordinary success, Walls' business partnership with Henson ended in September 1927 during the run of Thark, and from October, the Aldwych farces were presented by the firm of Tom Walls and Reginald Highley Ltd.

The films featured many of the actors who had starred in the plays; Walls directed all the films except for Just My Luck and Marry the Girl. It takes place at Christmas, with Walls and Lynn joined by Robertson Hare in the main nucleus of characters. centres around Ralph Lynn accidentally being forced to spend the night at a country inn with an old flame (Yvonne Arnaud) after they both miss their train, hire a car together and become stuck in the rain. You can change your choices at any time by visiting Cookie preferences, as described in the Cookie notice. Lynn's younger brother Hastings Lynn, played his brother's roles in successful productions in Australia and New Zealand. Two classic farces from the golden era of Aldwych, "A Cuckoo in the Nest" one of the most famous of the series, displaying the talents of Ralph Lynn, Tom Walls and Robertson Hare to particularly splendid advantage.
