About this deal

There are many other books with astronaut authors, and many of them are quite good, but this one is very nicely organized around topics one needs to know, including rare topics, about what being a human in space is like.

The semi-documentary aspect of this and a few other extracts throughout the book add an extra layer to the story. How to Astronaut" by Terry Virts is an intergalactic journey into the fascinating world of space travel. Colonel Chris Hadfield has spent decades training as an astronaut and has logged nearly 4,000 hours in space. Despite all the obstacles, eventually, there is a wonderful outcome that will bring you joy for a long time after you finish reading.Largely unknown today, Toto was arguably the first woman to spy for the British Intelligence Service. This richly illustrated book draws on Tim Peake’s first-hand experience of applying to be an astronaut in 2008, when he and five others were chosen – out of over 8,000 applications!

In the process, Peake reveals what spaceflight is really like: the wondrous view of Earth, the surreal weightlessness, the extraordinary danger, the surprising humdrum, the unexpected humour, the new-found perspective, the years of training, the psychological pressures, the gruelling physical toll, the thrill of launch and the trepidation of re-entry. To calculate the overall star rating and percentage breakdown by star, we don’t use a simple average. I love that all of these space-faring dogs have flaws and a past history that they have to carry around. Including puzzles and tests on visual perception and logic, mental arithmetic and concentration, psychological readiness, teamwork and leadership, survival, physical and medical skills, foreign languages (every astronaut has to know Russian! However, if you’re craving action-packed thrillers set in an alternate space-race history, look no further than Chris’ captivating fiction series that commenced with The Apollo Murders.Chris offers readers extraordinary stories from his life as an astronaut and shows how to make the impossible a reality. These are the moments and the lives that Into That Silent Sea captures, a book that tells the intimate stories of the men and women, American and Russian, who made the space race their own and gave the era its compelling character.

The felt flaps in this sturdy board book are perfect for little ones to turn and tug, which means you can get even the tiniest tot into books and finding the activity fun. The book interweaves the human story of risk and decision-making and the technological account of successes and failures of onboard computing in the Apollo program. Never giving up, I achieved unprecedented access into the shuttle mission that saved the Hubble Space Telescope and, for more than a decade, with the New Horizons team that first explored the Pluto system. Still acclaimed as one of the most remarkable and important motion pictures ever made, 2001: A Space Odyssey depicted the first contacts between humanity and extraterrestrial intelligence.

Like Collins, Cernan sheds the astronaut tough-guy image to show us the human cost of the Apollo Program, as well as the bravery and glory of the enterprise. Share this book with middle graders who enjoy stories about dogs, space adventures, or action adventure stories-or all three! It provides just the right balance of using layman's terms, technical discussions, and experiential narratives. The book offers parents and children a fun interactive way to play and read as they build a lifelong love of books together.
