Missed payments will show on your credit file potentially making credit harder to obtain and will result in late fees being added to the debt. That’s why we reckon they’re ideal for festivals, for budget campers or for sleeping on rocky ground (as they can’t puncture). Rather than the underside of your sleeping bag being compressed, as you'll find on a flatter mat, the distinctive deep grooves are there to help the bag loft. Meanwhile, family and car campers can pack something bigger and bulkier that offers great comfort, or even go for a double camping mat that two adults can share. The original was a great mat for 3-4 season backpacking, except for its infamous crisp-packet crinkly noise.

Indeed, Therm-a-rest boast that it has the greatest warmth-to-weight ratio available in any air mattress by far. The mat fits easily into its stuff sack, but only with a bit of persuasion can the Pumpbag be crammed in too. With a depth of just over 6cm it sits quite high off the ground, and some users in this review said that this does feels a bit precarious in combination with its narrowness; the fact that the baffles aren't aligned to help you keep centred on the mat may not help in this regard.

Also it only weighs 350g (regular) which is just insane so not only will you be able to put it anywhere in your pack, you won’t even notice it being there! As is usually the case with this sort of design the foam fill makes it a bit of a struggle to deflate, but once you've managed to squeeze the air out the mat fits easily into its stuff sack. A lot of mats that offer reliable warmth and pillowy comfort end up being heavy and hard to care about, but that’s not the case in Roben’s new iceshield camp 35. At 1kg it isn’t prohibitively heavy and it also deflates easily before packing away into a backpack.

You can change your choices at any time by visiting Cookie preferences, as described in the Cookie notice. Although, it is worth mentioning that this mat isn’t as thick as some premium double designs at 7cm, so if you’re looking for an alternative to your bed at home, pick a thicker pad. Open a valve and Vango’s comfort mat fills with air and is ready to go in seconds, or you can top it up quickly if you prefer a firmer sleeping mat. Sea to Summit isn’t messing around when it sticks “comfort” and “deluxe” in the name of this rather sumptuous sleeping pad. That being said, they are less comfortable and you’ll still feel the ground underneath you which is definitely worth taking into consideration. We can't verify this claim, but it's worth pointing out that the Exped mat in this review is only 30g or so heavier and has better insulation performance. A plush, mattress-like knit topper, four-season warmth and 10cm of thickness make this self-inflating single mat feel like a more portable version of your mattress at home. On the top side, a 30D ripstop nylon seems a like a good compromise between toughness and weight saving; but it's more often the underside of a mat that takes the punishment, and here Therm-a-Rest have sensibly used 70D. On a previous review some years ago we managed to tear the identical fabric of another Exped DownMat model surprisingly easily, and since then would always carry the repair pack that comes supplied - it fits in a sleeve in the stuffsack, it doesn't weigh much, and it's easily used even in a tent.

Not by much though, another baffle would probably have been ok but since it is only the hands which fall off the edge I wondered what I could use to buoy them up?

Overall verdict: If you are after the best self-inflating 4 season sleeping mat then this is the one for you. When you feel what it is made from you would think that it would rip easily but you can drag it to hell and back and it would survive as it’s such a great piece of kit. Free yourself from the faff of foot pumps on your next camping holiday with a self-inflating double mat.

At just 486g, the Downmat (size M) is extremely light for the insulation on offer - Add 13g for the stuff sack and 58g for the obligatory Pumpbag (more on that below) and you're still quids in when it comes to weight saving.Roll mats may not be quite as comfy to sleep on as inflatable mats, but they do have one redeeming feature: they’re nigh-on indestructible (unlike air mats, which, if pierced, will immediately deflate and be rendered useless), so they’re a great choice for rocky, uneven ground or for popping under an air mat for extra protection.
