Description

What 500 Mile Walkies is, is a diverting, humorous, affectionate and self-deprecating account of Mark’s walk with possibly the worst, and best, canine companion it is possible to borrow from a friend relieved to be shot of his pet for a few weeks. At first glance 500 Mile Walkies may seem a little ephemeral and lacking in observational muscle, however the author had a perceptive eye for what mattered most and makes light of what must have, at times, been a demanding walk. I really enjoyed this book I didn't realise you had 12 layers of skin on your nose I bet that was really sore. Raynor Winn mentions it in The Salt Path as being a book she’d read years before starting out on her own walk along the path.

But the difference between this trip and any other I've been on is that although I know I did learn a lot about myself, now I'm back I can't for the life of me remember what it was. One was a new purchase while another has rarely been outside any gear list I have compiled over the past decade. I have found it an amusing read thanks to mark’s way of telling his adventure from Cornwall up to the Thames . No missing or damaged pages, no creases or tears, no underlining or highlighting of text, and no writing in the margins. I found this a very enjoyable read, funny in places, and a great advocate for the places the author has visited.Three decades later, I'm chortling over this book at a second-hand book stall and the nice lady in charge lets me have it for free. This book inspired Radnor Winn to walk the South West Coast Path and her subsequent book, The Salt Path, transformed her life.

In 500 MILE WALKIES Mark and Boogie tackle Britains longest coastal footpath - from Somerset to Devon, from Cornwall to Dorset. Three Points of the Compass dives into the history of a post box originally destined for overseas but instead found its way on to British streets. Again, from having no idea how to skull an ancient skiff, he soon settles into the routine of raising with the dawn (or some time in the morning), skulling gently for a few miles and whiling away his time chatting to lock-keepers and studying the wildlife. A gentle meander around the south west peninsular with one man and his dog during the period of time when the rest of England was getting all agitated about a few wind swept sheep farms in the South Atlantic. Along comes Boogie, his mate's dog, who is used to London, is 100% Mongrol and prefers concrete to grass. I've walked many different stretches of the Path over the years and it was a pleasure to read about the areas I knew, as well as the sections that were new to me, such as the parts in Dorset.

I read it on recommendation because I was - am - thinking of walking the same coastal foot path, although not with with a dog and not in one go like Mr Wallington. Nevertheless, it is a very entertaining read, and probably the book I have read more often than any other. It gets a bit boring to hear yet again how awful Boogie is but there is also something charming about the inner journey the author travels. Three Points of the Compass sets out on a winter wander from London to Birmingham along the Grand Union Canal. I would have liked a bit more about Boogie and his misadventures, but all in all, it was a good read.Mark Wallingtons travels with boogie are books that are very good to go back to after a read that has taken a lot of concentration and investment. In the second book, I found Jennifer annoying and cruel - I hope that it is true just so she can read it and see what a bitch she comes across as.
