I read across the 'spice' continuum and while this book is a 'no spice' rating there is plenty of fantastic banter, conflict and tension between our main couple. It is loosly based on Jane Austen's masterpiece but adds some non-spice gothic Fae and spooky ghosts. So maybe it's not entirely that it's "too clean" somehow, but that we don't really get to see them come together. I also enjoyed her quirkiness about the contrast of the Victorian-styled human realm and the "impropriety" of the Fae realm.

The writing and characterization were really solid, and there were a pleasant lack of typos (which I've been encountering a lot of in indie published works lately, to my great chagrin). Desperate to bring him back to life, she stumbles upon a plot involving the murder of a Fae Princess and the mystery of how her 'family heirloom' locket from her own father plays a part in grand scheme of things. Oh, and you can’t forget a magic world connected to nature and the seasons which I am always such a sucker for. Highly recommend to any Austen lovers who also enjoy fantasy, mystery, and love a swoony romance without all the spice!World-building was decent and always clearly portrayed, but I do wish it had been more evocative and more present in the storytelling.

This FMC is a truly distasteful person, in both her behavior and character, and combined with the single-sided POV, the writing was hard to stay focused on. This gothic vibes, fantasy romance, loose retelling of Pride and Prejudice is everything I was hoping for and more. And the key to her salvation might be her arrogant, cold husband—the one she’d planned to rob and abandon.

The tension between Fitz and Elle was great, and in true PnP fashion he falls first and fights it, and she despises what he stands for, or rather what she THINKS he stands for. Although we definitely do have some very good fae, there are others that want nothing more than to kill. One downside, if you know the original story, you pretty much know/can guess the outcome here, but that didn't bother me much. Since there are approximately 9 zillion fae-themed fantasies nowadays, even a couple new twists on familiar mythology and tropes is nice. It had all the characters from Pride and Prejudice that we know and love, and some of the situations that we don't so much (anything pertaining to Mr.
