I also liked the fact that Amanda’s dad wasn’t totally one-dimensional, although initially he seemed like a stereotype. We want to see our triumphs, our adventures, our conflicts over non-gender-related shit, our loving relationships or happy single lives, our sci-fi thrillers and space operas, our epic fantasy quests and paranormal romances, our happily-ever-afters. If you love coming-of-age stories that talk about family, friendship and first love, then you shouldn’t miss this one! Amanda is such an incredible character, and I loved everything about her; her strength, her bravery, her acceptance and love of herself. I thought Amanda, Chloe, Anna, and Layla made a really great girl gang, and I liked how supportive they were.

On a related note, I'd really recommend reading the authors note in the back as I feel it includes extremely important information for trans folk and cis readers.

When he asked me what was wrong with me, I wrote six words on a notepad, my throat still too sore from the stomach pump to speak. I did however, wish there were more of the feelings Amanda had about herself before and after transitioning, and a little more in depth knowledge of being a transgender girl. In Lambertville, Amanda quickly makes friends with a rather diverse group of girls and, she draws the attention of a handsome boy, Grant Everett.

This isn’t a book where Amanda’s trans-ness is but one aspect of her character and the plot is about other things (although I like those too). Despite all of these positive interactions, Amanda’s father is worried that she will end up trusting the wrong person with her truth. Not once but at least twice (I’m too lazy to flip through the book to check all the kisses), he says he wants to kiss her and then asks, “Is that okay? Plus, as we learn through the flashbacks interspersed, Amanda’s father played an important role in rejecting her gender identification and enforcing masculinity. In the afterword, the author addresses some of the decisions she made in the novel "I'm worried that you might take Amanda's story as gospel, especially since it comes from a trans woman.
