Accompanying Gaiman’s beautiful words, which speak to the part of the soul that revels in darkness but is immutably drawn to the light, are befittingly beautiful illustrations by Italian graphic artist Lorenzo Mattotti — the talent behind Lou Reed’s adaptation of The Raven. However, my fans insisted that I was yet again missing out on something that every child should know.

Ethereal layers of laser-cut and die-cut paper overlay Schenker’s graphic silhouette illustrations, making tangible the beloved story’s inherent duality of darkness and light from which its enduring enchantment springs. If you want a book, which contains illustrations on "every single page", go for the Usborne Illustrated Fairy Tales, which is meant for slightly younger readers. We don’t share your credit card details with third-party sellers, and we don’t sell your information to others. Over 20 stories are presented and adorned with engaging illustrations by a cast of carefully selected artists. If you want your children to be stronger adults, or if you are an adult who wants some perspective, I highly recommend this book.Stories include “Hansel and Gretel”, “Sleeping Beauty”, “Rumpelstiltskin”, “Tom Thumb” and “The Frog Prince” as well as a short biography of the brothers themselves. References to religion are slight, but punishment for misdemeanours seems to echo the same message as the Christian idea of hell.

Mary Shelley's darkly disturbing tale is illustrated by Angela Barrett and newly introduced by Richard Holmes.TLDR: You're safe — there are no nefarious "third parties" lurking on my watch or shedding crumbs of the "cookies" the rest of the internet uses.

Two hundred years ago, the Brothers Grimm published their famous collection of folk tales, including these thirty much-loved stories of helpful elves: giants who can see into the next land: foolish but good-hearted leads: princesses with golden hair: faithful servants and wicked queens. The result of this testament to the combinatorial nature of creativity is Grimms Märchen ( public library) — a glorious German edition of Pullman’s retelling, illustrated in Tan’s breathtaking visual vignettes. Tan was at first reluctant — he had toyed with the idea of illustrating fairy tales over the years and had invariably ended up convinced that these highly abstract masterworks of storytelling, abloom at the intersection of the weird and the whimsical, didn’t lend themselves to representational imagery. Folio commissioned Hokyoung Kim for the artwork, while the late author’s wife, Wendy Benchley, provides a fascinating new introduction. Snow White and Other Grimms’ Fairy Tales includes twenty-three of the most popular tales penned by German brothers Jacob and Wilhelm Grimm, taken from their original collection Children’s and Household Tales, first published in 1812.Shortly after the release of Philip Pullman’s retelling of the Grimm classics, which was published unillustrated in the UK and the US, a publisher approached Australian artist and author Shaun Tan — creator of such modern masterpieces as The Lost Thing and The Arrival — about creating a cover and possibly some internal artwork for a German edition of Pullman’s fifty tales. I have no staff, no interns, not even an assistant — a thoroughly one-woman labor of love that is also my life and my livelihood.

It is a wonderful collection of stories from the famous collectors of fairytales, The Brothers Grimm. Here, in this superbly illustrated version aimed at younger children, there are also less familiar tales: King Thrushbeard and The Goose Girl. All of the stories promote a good wholesome moral compass - keep your promises, be kind to others, don't be greedy, make witches wear red-hot iron shoes and dance until they die screaming as entertainment at your wedding, that kind of thing.
