The book was being finished off in May 2022 (as you find out in the very last part), and it did make me pause for a moment to read the mention of "the late Taylor Hawkins", then shortly afterwards to see his signature printed alongside (most of) his bandmates beneath the piece written by Dave Grohl. This first-hand account of the BBC’s Later… with Jools Holland takes you behind the scenes of one of the world’s great musical meeting places.

Mark began writing about music when he reviewed The Sex Pistols' last ever show at San Francisco's Winterland in January 1978.He is equally at home writing about Johnny Cash as he is about Jay-Z or a more left-field performer such as Oumou Sangaré, the Grammy-award winning Malian singer and composer. It was presented by the musician and raconteur Jools Holland and featured an unprecedented range of musical talent. From Stormzy to Björk, from Smokey Robinson to Norah Jones, from Britpop to trip hop, here is the word on how Later… began, evolved and has endured, accompanied by exclusive interviews with some of the show’s regular stars as well as the unique pictorial record of Andre Csillag who photographed the show for over 20 years. Interesting to read about which performers 'got' the concept and which ones were not too keen on the format.

It doesn’t try to be too cool for school and isn’t a trend show or a generational show and isn’t aimed at a particular demographic. Part of what has made the show so special is the format all those bands, singers, stars and newbies brought together to listen as well as to perform in Jools circle of dreams. Dimbola Museum and Galleries recently hosted a 2nd talk on the exhibition ‘Experience the Isle of Wight Festival 2002 to 2023’ with Mark Cooper, ex-head of music at the BBC, and creator and Producer of ‘Later…with Jools Holland’. You get a good feel for how much Jools, the author and the rest of the programme's staff really love all sorts of music and want to share that with the viewers. It was another fabulous evening and Mark’s talk was very amusing and insightful, giving us all a window into the way in which ‘Later… ‘ works – or doesn’t sometimes! He also led the BBC’s TV coverage of Glastonbury from a muddy 1997 until a locked down 2020 and executive produced over 250 BBC music documentaries including the Britannia and America strands, the year-by-year Top of the Pops histories and Reginald D.
