If his behavior is only a trick to make the reader be surprised that they will learn to like Grubs, it's kind of a cheap one. To calculate the overall star rating and percentage breakdown by star, we don’t use a simple average. He has also released the stand-alone novel, The Thin Executioner, and the stand-alone short novels, Koyasan, and Hagurosan. At Books2Door, we believe that reading is a fundamental skill that every child should have to help improve their vocabulary, grammar, and critical thinking skills. I was getting to the point while reading this that I seriously wondered if I'd accidentally skipped over the paragraph that explained this. We don’t share your credit card details with third-party sellers, and we don’t sell your information to others. Other than his obvious demonic abilities, Lord Loss gained an obsession with chess, one of his only similarities to mankind, and has become very good at it. He leads her through his castle and encourages her, showing her torture rooms and the contained victims, whom he tortures with great care and affection.

Dervish explains to Grubbs that using magic is possible as Grubbs himself used magic to flee from Lord Loss and his minions. Lord Loss is seen again at the final battle, where he is blasted and temporarily paralysed by Grubbs. But then, by the very end of the book, Grubbs has another great growth of maturity and becomes responsible and interesting again.

What I was faced with after only two chapters was some of the most brutal horror and gore I’d read in a while.

There was this spoiled kid Grubbs who was always bothering his sister Gret, and was trying to be a rebel smoking against his parents concerns. Shan has taken a little bit of that Lovecraft and Barker vibe and made it more fun, accessible and palatable for this reader. However, Dervish is able to convince Lord Loss to let Grubbs finish the chess game, while he battles the familiars. This never stays, as I've found - especially considering there are at least ten more of these books to go.

Everyone is tense and he realises they made up a story to remove him from home for a night for whatever reason. Dervish rushes to save Grubbs when he's threatened, then Grubbs takes his place and makes a bad game worse. I’ve legits never read a book/series with more detailed descriptions of scenes of horrific violence and gore.

He friggin' loved the book, read it in the space of a week or two (books normally take him months to read), and approached me with a direct inquiry to see if I had any other titles in this series.

Anyway shortly afterwards his parents and sister send him to his grandmother’s while they go on their trip. When I first started reading I didn’t like Shans ‘the story isn’t being told but it’s happening right now’ style at all. Grubbs has to deal with the possibility of his Uncle being secretly a werewolf, on top of dealing with the possibility that the things that killed his parents are still looming over him.
