About this deal

I definitely get that the EVENT would be enough to scar someone for life, and the way the villain's life is changed by the event was perfectly reasonable, but pulling in the birds? I wanted to hold out to the end, since it took awhile to figure out who was the mass murderer; but it was work, and rather unsatisfying when it got there. I just hope Cody will get a grip soon, and come back to his senses, seeing that he is decided not to resort to psychiatric help.

Scared, she opens the door to find a large raven and then things get seriously creepy as she realises the raven is not alone…. Really engaging damaged hero, with smarts, guts and a horribly nightmarish past tackles a serial killer with a macabre literary sense. I didn't feel especially attached to Nathan Cody, so I don't think I'm likely to continue this series. And the weather at the moment is not to my liking – so yes we’re never happy about it … never mind all the awful things that are happening everywhere right now! He's joined by The Girl who's mainly here to provide some chemistry, as she and the Main Guy have A Past (of course they do).I’d like to say a big thank you to Bonnier Publishing for my copy of this book, this review is my unbiased thank you to them. My kindle is my life but I also have a substantial bookshelf in my cosy reading room where I can go to escape the stresses of family life with plenty of tea and chocolate. The audio version is read by Jonathan Keeble who skillfully uses a variety of British accents and really knows how to increase the creep and suspense factor by adjusting the speed of the narration or inserting a brief pause. The targets are co-workers, the killer’s signature is a variety of dead birds but the culmination is the brilliance of the story.

Despite this there is a large aspect of mystery throughout that doesn’t get revealed until the very end at which point everything makes sense. Throughout the book, Jackson takes us on an affectionate but not completely misty-eyed, trip through the familiar streets of his native city, and the city takes a role as a separate character in the book. My blogging friend Raven over at Raven Crime Reads shared a brilliant guest post from David about the Liverpool setting and I highly recommend you give it a read. It is an engrossing read with a detailed story that the author wraps up beautifully with a rather unexpected explanation. This is a very good start to a new series and successfully introduces the characters in this blood curdling thriller. As, I’m sure, will his partnership with DC Megan Webley, a former girlfriend now working alongside Nathan as they try to solve the mystery of who is murdering fellow police officers. It’s not long before DC Megan Webley recognises the deceased as one of their own, a police officer she used to work with. Though I would try another of this guy's books before I would read a number of reliably disappointing bestselling authors in this genre, I don't actually plan to do so. DS Nathan Cody is a flawed but dedicated investigator who finds himself in a complex serial killing scenario.

She spends her days juggling mom-life, reading, blogging, planning date nights with her husband and working as a nurse. This backstory is incredibly promising for the next book and I can’t wait to see where it takes him. It’s that time of year ago when I’ve been reading and not reviewing – spending more time gardening as the grass grows so quickly and the weeds multiply. And then the killer strikes again, and Cody realises the threat isn’t to the people of Liverpool after all – it’s to the police. Even though this book is more scary and, in parts more gruesome, than I like to read, I did finish it, and enjoyed it for the characters and the plot. Meanwhile he's been partnered with a former lover - now engaged - and his own PTSD driven explosive behavior has driven his own fiancé away for good.
