It seemed like an eternity but it could not have been more than five seconds that I sat there, paralyzed. If a bad storm is coming, put a 2-edged axe into a stump facing the storm to ensure the storm goes around you. The activity became so notorious that General Andrew Jackson and his men visited the farm and, after a night of harassment from the witch, departed quickly.

Taking a close look, the figure seemed to be ghostly in appearance and had the looks of a woodsy outdoorsman type with something that appeared to be fishing gear. This story came to me from my elderly grandparents, who heard it from their aged relatives, placing the origins of this story in the early 19 th century. With the publication of Daryl Gregory’s recent novel Revelator, we thought we’d share some of our other favorite tales from this gorgeous, dangerous region. When we got in the house, she wheeled about on us suddenly and instructed us very firmly to never go into the woods after dark.

Far from being simply Southern Gothic with a mountainous locale, Appalachian Gothic takes a much weirder bent–the traditions are older, the presence of God is a little more sinister (and might be covering for some weird eldritch deity–check out Old Gods of Appalachiafor more on that ), and there’s a cool, methodical, eerie atmosphere to the stories told in these mountains. At 3:00 am, around the same time as the original ghost sighting, a train approached the Bostian Bridge. Two friends Merlin and Nugget get lost on the Appalachian Trail when they realise they are being followed. The family claimed to hear knocking outside of their home–at all hours of the night–and whenever the Bell family attempted to investigate, they came up empty-handed.

The creature’s hands were gnarled and taloned, and it was wearing what appeared to be a dark metallic dress.

My grandfather hardly knew his father, so much of his life became folklore, gaps in his identity were filled in with grand stories. He tried to ignore this sensation, but then he looked back at the house and saw someone in an upstairs window…watching him. She disappeared and reappeared to the family several times throughout the 1820s, first to convince the Bells’ daughter not to marry and also to speak with the Bells’ son. This all culminates in the collapse of the Silver Bridge (which actually happened in Point Pleasant in 1967). In the Appalachians, with all the hollows (and hollers) and thickly wooded slopes, the little springs rising unexpectedly out of dark holes and vanishing again—that’s a landscape full of hidden things. The small country church was transformed into a field hospital, and wounded soldiers were treated here by people with little understanding of germs and sanitation. This anthology is comprised of 8 tales with a lot of recognisable names from the indie horror scene. That shit doesn't go real far with people around here, it can really kind of set them off depending on the dog and the person.

On the Appalachian Trail, roughly 24 hikers go missing each year, although the great majority are located within two days. The death count of these soldiers seemed to be so high that some people believe that their spirits remain. Cherokee legend claims that there was a bloody battle between Catawba and Cherokee warriors on Brown Mountain. She grew up in the woods and around hunting and things of that nature her whole life so she knew what I meant.
