About this deal

The Code helps Caterpillar employees put our values and principles into action every day by providing detailed guidance on the behaviors and actions that support our values of Integrity, Excellence, Teamwork, Commitment and Sustainability. We think the 'Master Moves' expansion pack would provide the best range of options to extend your child's understanding of coding basics. Planning and Sequencing: After twisting the segments a few times, kids will discover that if they plan a path and twist the dials to create the right sequence, they can get Code-a-pillar Twist™ to follow their plan! Using straight, left and right segments, students arrange Code-a-Pillar’s segments and watch the caterpillar move accordingly!

The early levels are not explained fully or well, so parents may need to help kids plug through to get to higher levels, where the app starts to shine a bit brighter. Once the segments are connected and the start button is pressed, the Code-a-Pillar will take the programmed route specified by the young user, a similar concept to coding. Now I explore wearable tech, VR/AR, tablets, gaming and future/emerging trends in our changing world. Our projects are tried and tested on our own kids or at events we run, so we are sure you can have a go at home with your kids. Audio directions for what kids need to do feel a bit incomplete, so parents may need to help out, at least at first.

For little kids, this is a cute coding activity that doesn't carry any of the pitfalls of so many free apps. If children don't develop these skills as they grow up then physical making projects can become frustrating rather than fun. The expansion packs allow you to do more with your Code-a-Pillar such as adding more turns or sounds. Each segment of the Code-a-Pillar communicates an action to the “brain” of the creature — actions such as moving forward, turning right, or turning left. We love to follow cool new inventions on Kickstarter and we hunt out all the latest announcements about tech toys and gadgets for the coming Christmas holidays.

And we love SAM Labs wireless electronics components for making it easy for kids to make Internet of Things inventions. The toy moves based on how you plug in its modular segments, a step on the road towards understanding the concept of code. This could be a potential disaster in an early childhood classroom, especially among children with sensory issues.

By programming different combinations to send Code-a-pillar Twist down various paths, preschoolers can try and try again, exercising those critical thinking skills! My 5 year old used the Sticklebricks to build an obstacle course, with a bridge and some alien barriers. The solution is to restrip the wires, resolder them, and apply a nice solid blob of hot-melt glue as a strain relief. However with some adult input a young child can gain lots of additional benefits as they experiment and discover different ways of "coding" it. We're particularly interested to explore products that combine maker skills with tech skills such as electronics but others focus purely on the physical making skills that are still important to modern making.Place the green and red target discs flat on the floor and see if you can arrange the Code-a-pillar’s coding to hit each disc!

Our kids technology product reviews are intended to help you work out whether a toy, gadget or kit is a good fit for your child or family. As the child adds a segment onto the Code-a-pillar the button on the back lights up so you know that you have attached it properly. Our Worldwide Code of Conduct, first published in 1974, defines what we stand for and believe in, documenting the uncompromisingly high ethical standards our company has upheld since its founding in 1925. Tap and drag commands such as straight, turn right, dig, or dance from the command tray to each empty spot on a maze-like path. Right off the bat your little ones will be able to not only decide what they want their Code-a-pillar to do but they’ll see the immediate “cause and effect” of their choices. Instead of getting not-yet-potty-trained kids to code with a screen and keyboard, this plastic caterpillar uses more subtle tactics: it teaches the basics of coding, like sequencing and programming, with segments of the caterpillar's body.
