A survey by the National Childbirth Trust (NCT) in 2015 found that about one in three dads reported concern about their mental health. The advice, approved by healthcare professionals, is quick to read, easy to understand and simple to digest, delivered in short, unambiguous bullet points and, no-nonsense rules – and, pretty unarguably, spot on. I can't wait to get the other books in this series, because they are fun, informative, a really quick read, but they take this seriously and are PROUD to be dads instead of all the "Oh no help! The local woods are a great place to go with your troopers with trees to climb, forts to build and games to play there is always plenty to do! He then posted me a copy of Pocket Commando Dad and said it was a gift to keep in my changing bag, how nice is that!

This little gem, however, has been more useful than anything else - it's full of practical advice and goes into detail about the things that matter, like nappy changing - I had no idea, and with covid taking away stuff like antenatal classes this was a lifesaver. Most of our furniture sets and some larger or heavy items such as compost will be delivered using wooden pallets. With step-by-step advice and Commando Dad Top Tips, this book will ensure you’re ready to parent with military precision. Now I know what readers are probably thinking, “Those military types are a close-knit bunch and this is probably a plug for one of their mate’s books”.

If you’re looking for a clear and simple guide to doing dad things right, I would certainly get this book. I think it’s fair to say that these standards and rules are fabulous guidelines for any parent to live by.Featuring expert advice and carefully drafted mission briefs, these books for dad are perfect for teaching skills while making special memories. The first thing we need to challenge is the assumption that dads can’t get postnatal depression because it is purely hormonal. The “mission” of being a dad is quickly explained and is broken down into key chapters, each of which is given an army based title – my favourite being “On Manoeuvres: Transporting The Troops”. He told me that if I had any parenting questions or needed any advice, I should not hesitate to ask.

Really whatever comes to mind, I have had a very interesting few weeks finding out about what my kids get up to to entertain themselves during this time. These make the whole dad thing so much more accessible for people like me who don’t have the actual experience of having a child yet. Using a bullet pointed discourse structure makes the text (and the content) really easy to engage with. With Commando Dad's rules and specially adapted military phrases such 'deployment date' (due date); 'BT' (baby trooper); 'CO' (Commanding Officer - the person in charge - or, in this context, the mum-to-be), 'Deployment Kit List' (the essential kit needed for the birth) and 'Sensory Overload' (used to explain the situation when you get so overwhelmed with new information being thrown at you that it impacts your ability to act effectively) - this a fun but ultimately useful book for every man about to embark on his greatest ever fatherhood. The advice, approved by healthcare professionals, is quick to read, easy to understand and simple to digest, delivered in short, unambiguous bullet points and, no-nonsense rules - and, pretty unarguably, spot on. Neil should have showcased choking and how to deal with the airway obstruction in the first aid chapter.
