The sole directorial effort from the Chiodo brothers - the special effects team behind such hits as Critters and Team America: World Police - Killer Klowns from Outer Space is the wacky 1988 horror comedy classic against which all other knowing B-movie efforts should be measured. Kreating Klowns (1080i; 12:50) is an archival piece with Charles Chiodo and creature fabricator Dwight Roberts. Equal parts ‘50s throwback, ‘80s satire, and effects demo-reel, Killer Klowns from Outer Space was destined for a cult following and is well-made enough to earn that status. The new 2018 Arrow special edition blu-ray (not to be confused with the 2012 Arrow special edition blu-ray) is here! As I mentioned above the sequences where optical effects are employed can look a bit off: the image can fluctuate, the image gets a bit blurrier, black levels are a bit murkier, and some minor bits of dirt pop up.

While sound quality is perfectly fine with some decent range and fidelity I can’t say the mix is all that imaginative. Speaking of which: though not literally new material, we're now treated to a more fully expanded collection of Chiodo Bros. The effort is certainly welcome, assuming you're a die-hard fan or an aspiring director -- but since there's no sound during any of these films, some optional commentary with the Chiodos (during the other five) or new music cues would have been greatly appreciated. The blus naturally trump the old DVD edition, the old Arrow disc is just that little bit better than the MGM for fixing the sound and including those additional features, and now the 2018 blu is the best of all, right? Vignettes (SD) — Two very brief clips showing that use to be Easter Eggs on the previous DVD, showing auditions for the Klowns (4 min) and an alternate take with Officer Mooney (7 seconds). Interviews, making-of documentaries, an audio commentary track with the Chiodo brothers (which has been released previously), trailers, deleted scenes, image galleries, bloopers – this thing has it all. who'd made everything from the claymation Simpsons to the Team America puppets and most importantly, the critters for Critters.

Still, volume levels are at least mixed well, dialogue is clear and I didn’t detect any noise or damage in either track. The Chiodo Brothers make a clown out of Blu-ray with a mildly impressive but in the end, only passable 1080p/AVC MPEG-4 encode of 'Killer Klowns.I mean, giving MGM the benefit of the doubt, that was probably due to older scans being less able to pick the finery out than an attempt to scrub the grain away at the expense of detail. Amongst them are André De Toth's Ramrod, Robert Altman's Images, and Stephen Chiodo's Killer Klowns from Outer Space. Really, the craft on display is the key component, making the demo-reel aspects both the best and worst things about the movie. Dialogue is well-prioritized and both sound effects and score have some decent spatial activity from time to time. In several of the interviews, there’s even talk of the planned sequel, which still appears to be in the works and, yes, will feature practical effects.
