When you see ‘flavouring’ on a list of ingredients, it can mean anything. Sometimes flavourings are natural, like lemon zest, other times they are artificial and made from chemicals like petroleum. Some natural flavourings are made from meat and meat by-products. Clearly, the big issue with this Pot Noodle flavour from a vegan perspective is the inclusion of milk-derived ingredients. But not all the Pot Noodle flavours that the makers Unilever suggest are non-vegan actually contain milk-based ingredients. This simple weeknight meal is made with a short list of pantry staples. Despite their simplicity, they still result in BIG flavors in every bite. Here are the ingredients you need:

Use metallic tongs to toss the noodles with the sauce to ensure they are evenly coated so every bite is a flavor explosion. It is our policy that a product labelled as ‘vegan’ means that the product is not made from or contains ingredients derived from animals, has not been contaminated with non-vegan foods and that we can demonstrate this via scientific testing.

Versatile and fun to customize. You can think of this recipe as a blank canvas. The noodles and sauce can easily be customized to fit your taste buds, and you can even add veggies or meat to bulk up the meal. Place the rice noodles in a heat-proof bowl and pour boiling water over top until it covers the noodles. Let the noodles soak until they’re just about al dente, then drain. Noodle dishes are some of my favorites because they come together so easily and always feature a layered, flavorful sauce. These red curry noodles are no different! It’s an easy Thai-inspired recipe that puts red curry sauce-coated rice noodles on display. An almost direct copy of the Beef and Tomato Pot Noodle, this own-brand option from Morrisons is equally devoid of taste and is seemingly vegan friendly. But if we take a look at a different flavour, in this case Chow Mein, things are not quite so obvious: For instance, the Beef and Tomato (which does not contain beef), Sweet and Sour, and Chinese Chow Mein flavours do not list milk or milk-derived items specifically amongst their ingredients. As such, there are two possible reasons why the makers of Pot Noodle do not claim most flavours to be vegan:

It could be the case that the cross-contamination with fish and shellfish is to such an extent that these varieties of Super Noodles cannot be considered to be suitable for vegetarians. Conclusion

Coconut milk. Canned full fat coconut milk is the secret to a luscious and creamy sauce. It also tones down the heat from the red curry paste. So, whilst Super Noodles are not labelled as vegan, there are three flavours that may be considered vegan-friendly – Chow Mein, Peri Peri and Mild Curry. For the ultimate curry fix, use these noodles as a base for paneer tikka masala or an eggplant curry. The following table shows which Batchelors Super Noodles and vegan and which are vegetarian: Super Noodles Are Super Noodles worth the syns? That’s a question you might ask yourself, especially when there are syn-free options available. It’s essential to remember that while Super Noodles are tasty and convenient, they don’t necessarily offer the most nutrition.

The products which are not marked as vegan are being produced in an environment where eggs and milk products are used. Therefore, it may contain traces of animal-based products. Most vegans accept that it’s standard for food factories to produce vegan and non-vegan items. Whether you choose to eat food that has not been prepared in a dedicated vegan environment is your decision. The reason why Super Noodles are not marked as vegan is because that would require the manufacturer, Premier Foods, to take extra steps to eliminate the risk of cross-contamination between vegan and non-vegan products. So, there we have it. The non-vegan flavours that do not obviously contain non-vegan ingredients might be okay for vegans after all… as long as you don’t mind the possible risk of cross-contamination (which presumably is not that high, though we can’t say for certain).

Smash

If all that seems a little too much like hard work, you can of course simply buy any of the vegan-friendly options above. Pot Noodle & Super Noodles Conclusions Lime juice. The acidity from the fresh lime juice helps round out the rest of the flavors and gives the dish a nice, refreshing pop! Heat the curry paste in a wok over medium-high heat. Next, add the garlic and ginger and cook until fragrant. Turn down the heat and stir in the coconut milk. Garlic. The first of the two aromatics. Fresh garlic cloves give the red curry sauce a savory baseline of flavor.
