How did you do it, Mother?” I asked, still staring at the passing carriages below. “How did you travel all the way from Gastineux to marry a toad you didn’t love?”

Anyway. YES. I would totally recommend this series in general. This sequel novel is great! I loved The Kiss of Deception, and I really enjoyed this book. Now, as long as the love triangle is officially dead and Rafe and Lia can ride off into the sunset from start to finish of book three (that might be an exaggeration)... I'll be happy. Maybe. Perhaps I want Venda to burn a little too. And maybe Morrighan too. He had jumped to his feet too. He grabbed my hand so I had to look at him. “You wanted to kiss me.” But soon, they heard a voice on the loudspeaker that the parents of Little Red Riding Hood should come and get her from the counter. This was the character that author Pearson was playing on that day and instead of telling her real name to the founders, she chose to tell the name of her character. But her parents were smart enough to find out that it was her. However, these days she wakes up all by herself, but still continues to work out some characters during the day time. During her second grade, author Pearson was very fond of her teacher, Mrs. Alsenz, who used to tell some very good stories to the class. This trend continued till her 12th grade as author Pearson came across a number of inspiring teachers who helped her to develop her storytelling skills. Later, she joined the State University of Long Beach and obtained her BFA. Before getting married and giving birth to her children, author Pearson worked for a small time as an artist. She says that being a mother was the most challenging job of her life. However, it also brought some rewards for her. During the same time, author Pearson joined the University of San Diego and earned her teaching credentials. Then I started getting really angry as what was happening in Venda began to have repercussions outside of the kingdom walls. But don't think that Lia is going to sit idly by and watch as things unfold. She's a woman of action, as we've already seen. And she may not have an entourage, but she has help.

Of course, the Komizar has zero shot (he's the villain - or one of them). In my opinion, Kaden NEVER had a shot (not even in The Kiss of Deception), but that's just my opinion. In this book, it becomes very, very clear who Lia has feelings for, who Lia cares about, etc. It's stated in her thoughts, how she loves one and how she cares for one. Two totally different emotions going on, and Kaden is not on the receiving end of the emotion he wants. I believe Kaden truly loves her, but it seems like a blind love. Honestly, Kaden's feelings for Lia seem more like obsession or fascination. And Lia... she cares about him, but not like that. In The Kiss of Deception, a new realm is masterfully created, featuring court intrigue, feuding nations, breathtaking landscapes, and the gift of sight. Fans of the Game of Thrones series will enjoy the magic and fantasy in this timeless dystopian world.”— VOYA This is the kind of story I love—a heart-pounding tale of magic and murder, betrayal and romance set in a richly imagined fantasy landscape.” —Cindy Williams Chima, New York Times–bestselling author of the Seven Realms and the Heir Chronicles

The Komizar proved to be far more interesting that I'd have thought, ruthless, insidious, cunning and utterly cold-blooded; maybe I would have liked him to be a bit more unpredictable -two or three chapters with him are more than enough to figure his character out perfectly. I do hope he'll return in the final instalment and show more sides of himself. My mother laid her hand on me again, her palm resting on my shoulder. My skin stung at her touch. Her comfort came too late. The priest offered one last prayer in my mother’s native tongue, a prayer of safekeeping that, oddly, wasn’t tradition, and then she drew her hand away.

I had a bad feeling about this book, initially. We're on Kaden's home turf, which led me to believe that the love triangle would grow more strong, fueling Kaden's feelings for Lia, and possibly having Lia develop deep for Kaden. Sorry, Kaden fans. The romance isn't straight and clear-cut, but it's no longer a love triangle. Lia uses Kaden to survive, and while she feels guilty, she doesn't feel love. There are no rules to survival. Even though this was offered as comfort, I bristled at the formal name my mother insisted on using, the hand-me-down name that had belonged to so many before me. I wished that at least on this last day in Morrighan, she’d cast formality aside and use the one I favored, the pet name my brothers used, shortening one of my many names to its last three letters. Lia. A simple name that felt truer to who I was.

Mary E. Pearson is the NYT bestselling and award-winning author of eleven YA novels and one novella. Her works include the completed trilogy, The Remnant Chronicles, which in a starred review, Publisher’s Weekly called “masterfully crafted.” Her favorite activities as a child were climbing tall trees imagining she was a hero in some fantastical world, or running along fence tops and roofs pretending she was a spy with a bagful of amazing gadgets. So far. If you weren't a fan of the first book ( and some of my friends were not), then I don't think anything about this book is going to change your mind. Sorry. I did enjoy the general direction the book takes and the internal conflicts and moral dilemmas that are presented to the reader. The magic system is still not clear and the prophecies and Lia's purpose are still very vague. After her strong Jenna Fox series, Pearson adeptly switches gears here from science fiction to fantasy, but her ability to write a romance featuring complex characters and a strong plot remains constant." — The HornBook The Kiss of Deception has it all—beautiful writing, heart-pounding suspense, a fiery princess, and an epic romance that’ll make you swoon. This is definitely one of my favorite reads of the year!" —Alyson Noël, #1 New York Times–bestselling author of The Immortals Even though this was offered as comfort, I bristled at the formal name my mother insisted on using, the hand-me-down name that had belonged to so many before me. Continuing on the vein of the romance. It seems like EVERYONE is in love (or in lust) with Lia. The Komizar is around Lia, Kaden, and Rafe's age, and he becomes interested in her too. But his interest is more in power - the Vendan people begin to see Lia as a divine sign of some sort (because of her gift), and Lia works hard to build a good reputation and relationship with the people. So we have the Komizar, Kaden, and Rafe all vying for Lia's hand. I pushed away from the window, fogged with my own breath, and left the endless hills of Morrighan to their own worries. It was time for me to meet my day. And some new characters I fell in love with, mostly Aster, she was a precious little girl. I still love Eden because of things and just so many others.I'm half-tempted to just leave this review saying, "GO READ THIS SERIES NOW". Seriously, the struggle of writing a review for a book you really, really enjoyed. This book is super close to five stars - The Kiss of Deception was a five-star read for me - but it came just a wee bit short. Still, I LOVED this book. I cannot wait to read book three. She carefully laid the cloak across my bed. It had been steamed and hung in the vault so no fold or wrinkle would tarnish its beauty. I ran my hand along the short velvet nap. The blue was as dark as midnight, and the rubies, tourmalines, and sapphires circling the edges were its stars. The jewels would prove useful. It was tradition that the cloak should be placed on the bride’s shoulders by both her parents, and yet my mother had returned alone.
