Much of the cast joined in October 2019, and filming took place in locations throughout Northern Ireland, the Republic of Ireland and Iceland from August to December 2020.

Perhaps the only criticism I would have for the film would have to be just a single shot of the film(yes, just a single shot) where the actor portraying Valkyrie is shown to have braces; which was also shown in the trailers; and it seems Eggers was not given final cut to make sure nothing like this would be seen, so there’s that little “whoopsie” in an otherwise amazing movie experience. What to know

Some of these more traditional moments unfold in long takes, and they largely manage to hold attention, but when they’re deployed for action scenes, the film’s shortcomings as a specifically Hollywood production also become apparent. The Northman has plenty of viciousness unfolding in its margins, especially as a tale whose “hero” is just as merciless as its villains. But too many of these instances feel bloodless, despite the frequent stabbings and dismemberments; so much of the violence is implied, just off-screen, but little of it is felt. The film’s nudity and sexuality feel just as dulled. In either case, the camera captures bodies at their most vulnerable — whether in moments of passion or bloodshed — but only briefly, before cutting away. During the evening celebrations, Amleth and Olga make love; they promise to overcome Fjölnir together. Over several nights Amleth kills prominent members of Fjölnir's estate, and Olga mixes the food supply with fly agaric, a potent hallucinogen. The ensuing chaos allows Amleth to enter Fjölnir's house. Amleth reveals his identity to Gudrún, who replies that she was Aurvandill's slave and that Amleth was conceived by rape. Gudrún also reveals that she masterminded Fjölnir's coup because she wanted both Aurvandill and Amleth dead; she then tries to seduce Amleth, who, after a moment, rejects her.
