Ed Gamble is piloting a food-related Taskmaster spin-off, British Comedy Guide can exclusively reveal. Gamble performing a live show of Off Menu with Ed Gamble and James Acaster at Royal Albert Hall in October 2023 But fair enough: events like this are as much communion as comedy. To encounter in-person the people we spend happy hours with each week as, essentially, voices in our head – well, that can be a thrill, as I’m sure it was here for the man who told us all, from the sky-high balcony of the Albert Hall, about his granny’s “wet meat”, or the man whom Acaster berated for expressing his preference for a cheeseboard over pudding. A meandering live event Off Menu may be, but I ended it well-stuffed with good humour and in hearty agreement with Elis James’s closing sentiment. “Food,” he rhapsodised: “it’s fantastic!” The 36-year-old lost seven stone in weight whilst battling type one diabetes. His diabetes diagnosis came at the age of 13 and he is now a vegan convert, leading a plant-based lifestyle.

Ed Gamble is set to put on his apron and baking gear for tonight's Great Celebrity Bake Off Stand Up to Cancer. He began his comedy career whilst studying philosophy at Durham University. Gamble would perform with the Durham Revue and went on to be a finalist in the 2007 Chortle Student Comedy Awards. In America, people chose iced tea a lot. So we started saying: ‘have you ever met Ice-T’? And every time, they had,” says Gamble.

On stage, Ed Gamble toured with his one man show Mammoth, which sold out the entire run at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival in 2017 including extra shows added every weekend. That was his largest nationwide tour to-date, including three nights at Leicester Square Theatre. Ed previously won a Chortle Award in 2014 for Best Compere and has provided national tour support for Greg Davies’ tours in 2017, 2013, and 2012 as well as tour support for Russell Kane and Chris Addison. Washing up is in the family genes. My grandad used to claim he was the Northern Ireland junior champion of washing up. And I believed that for a long time, because someone made him a certificate and he had it on the wall. It took me until I was about 21 to realise it was a joke. My favourite things Ed Gamble is an award-winning stand-up comedian, writer and podcaster. He is co-host of the mega-hit Off Menu podcast, and a judge on Great British Menu. He is also the co-presenter of Radio X’s Sunday morning show with Matt Crosby. Gamble’s latest tour show, Electric, had a twice-extended sell-out UK run.Beforehand, but you and the Great Benito [how they refer to producer Ben, a regular presence on the pod, though a silent one] said it could get confusing. I said, just let me try it for the first one.”

Gamble will be touring a stand-up show around the UK next year, with dates to be announced imminently. He covers the trials of being a diabetic with a sweet tooth, his teenage battles with obesity, the joy of cooking and the power of food to bring us together. Any diabetic will tell you, it’s like having another, 24-hour job. Especially if you really like food and you like trying new things. Because every time you try something new, you don’t necessarily know how your body will react to it. So I really think about the impact it is going to have, but quite often I’ll go: “I’m going to eat it anyway.” Each date on the tour will be a normal episode, with a new guest, only in front of a live audience. On the regular podcast, the secret ingredient has only been chosen once, when comedian Jayde Adams mentioned hundreds and thousands, though it was during the pandemic and on Zoom, so technically, they couldn’t throw her out. “She would have smashed our heads together,” says Gamble. What if it happens at a live show? “I guess we’ll replace them with an audience member,” shrugs Acaster. “Or, if it’s a theatre with a trap door in the middle of the stage: ‘stand there’,” says Gamble.

My friends’ parents loved me coming over , because you could treat me like a little human dustbin. I was a lot fatter than the other children. I enjoyed every single morsel presented to me. Which I’m glad of; it gave me a good basis in food. And now that’s a large part of my job.
