I used the stainless steel Clikstand throughout my journey across Latin America. In use, it’s extremely stable and proved effective in all but the windiest of conditions. Mine have seen service at high altitudes in the Andes to cook quinoa and rice. It’s extremely user-friendly, it’s relaxing to use, and burns cleanly and quietly. Boiling times are admittedly slower than a multi-fuel system stove. And there’s noticeably less oomph. For this reason, I wouldn’t recommend a Trangia for winter trips that require melting large amounts of snow. Denatured alcohol can also be a stubborn to light in extreme cold. If you’re expecting freezing temperatures, stow your fuel bottle inside your tent. But as a piece of kit, this is just fantastic and worth every penny. It is superlight, the stove is efficient, and with the trivet cross-stand it permits multiple permutations. Given the variables of wind, altitude and cooking menus, a 350ml (12oz) bottle will typically last me up to a week – like all stoves, more will be consumed at high elevations and in gale-force situations. As a general rule, aim for denatured alcohol/methylated spirits that are 95% and above for a strong, reliable flame. Additive-free ethanol burns cleanest and most efficiently but is generally more expensive and can be harder to find.

You can use the stand as legs on the bottom to ensure the stability of the burner on uneven ground. The top of the stand opens above the burner and is textured to grip a pot or pan. The top of the stand is on springs so it can handle a heavy pot. Evernew's ECA-268R Appalachian Set Titanium Mug Pot 500 and Multifuel Stove is a good choice if you want a solo cooking system with nothing to go wrong. Its flexible too, so even if fuel is hard to get you could always burn wood, though this is fiddly on this particular stove. In alcohol mode it is noticeably less efficient than the TD (which also has more room for wood in the wood mode). Evernew breathes and burns well (TD will run 50% longer...heating slower but to a significantly higher temperature). A titanium TD is a lighter stove (even including the two tent spare tent pegs) and with less fuel to carry means TD wins for long hikes. It may seem petty but while the DX kit only weighs 86g, most people will use 50-60g per day of alcohol...efficiency becomes a relatively important issue. Isopropanol has a lower heat output and can be bought in some camping stores, pharmacies or online. It’s a good option if you’re looking for a longer burn time and fuel efficiency. If you’re torn between a larger stovetop cooking system or compact stoves such as a Trangia spirit burner, it really comes down to budget vs goals. As for the price: you only pay once, and use the thing perhaps hundreds of times, long after the price is forgotten. Or else you learn that it is not for you, and you may call that an expensive lesson or a cheap one. I call it cheap and resume the search. For this type of adventure, it’s likely you’ll need something more lightweight and portable, a solo stove, for instance.

The stove itself is made of solid brass to produce the most heat possible. Burners will eventually be covered in soot as you use them, and like a good stove it is, it will make the stove perform better for cooking! This stove has a putout lid that you can also use as a flame regulator. Remember to use the foldable handle as you can burn yourself because of the flame. When you got some spare alcohol inside the burner, use the screw cap to seal the burner. No need to fumble around, rehousing the leftover alcohol! What We Love Okay, it certainly is expensive. If you calculate the difference between conventional gear and titanium gear and price your ounces saved, you will understand that air has become the most expensive commodity in the outdoor world. It will burn dry twigs fairly efficiently, but it has a small combustion chamber and you need to almost watch it boiling to keep it fueled. It is also a bit hard to use a second windscreen in this mode as you need to keep space to feed wood but not set fire to any fixed pot handles. Keweis Portable Outdoor Mini Alcohol Stove is a portable alcohol stove for camping for longer days in the wilderness. In such a small size, this stove will provide you stable flame to help you cook. It consists of 2 apparatus: the stove and support where your pot or pan stands on. It’s a practical combination that doesn’t require much space in your carrier. The complete unit is easily bent out of shape so it needs storing properly when transporting - inside a cooking pot is ideal.

I have twice boiled water using pine twigs (once in rain)—it was easy and relatively fast, but messy.I've used my Evernew set for summer camping and will be taking it winter camping too. I love it so much I even use it to boil up water for coffee in my kitchen. On a full stove of alcohol, I can boil enough for 4 to 6 cups within 15 minutes (refilling my small pot between boils). The stove is fast and blooms every time, unlike some titanium stoves out there. I like having the versatility to burn wood if fuel runs out on a hike. Less safe: Once set up, these stoves are not the most stable and require some careful handling as you try to balance the pot on the small cooking surface area. Because of this small surface area to cook on, most models require an additional stand to elevate and stabilize your pot. The DX Stand adds greater versatility to the alcohol stove. Acting as a pot stand and partial wind shield, the DX also adds the ability to burn solid fuels in the stove, namely twigs and small biomass or alternatively Esbit solid fuel tablets. The power plate (perforated insert) is needed to burn solid fuels, but also helps improve burning efficiency in cold weather. The concept here is pretty simple: just clean out a cat food can and then drill or punch holes in it around the rim of the lid. The classic can to use for this is Fancy Feast (due to its comparatively small size and low price), with a single or double layer of holes punched in around the top of the lid (more holes equals greater weight savings but less fuel capacity). During testing, I drilled in a single layer of holes without incident but found the structure of the can became too flimsy after this to continue to drill in the second layer of holes. Note that the Clikstand prices above include the optional windshield. Note that ‘factory seconds’ with only minor cosmetic scuffs are often available. The wide base of the Vargo Decagon adds stability (especially helpful in windy conditions) while still coming in at one of the lowest weights in my test.Water Bottles and Flasks Some would say that Water is the most important thing when it comes to being out in the wild for any period of time. There are many methods of collecting, purifying and carrying water in the field and its important that you choose the right gear for the type of outing that you are doing – Depending on load-carrying if you are on foot or in a vehicle and many other factors. Here at Wood to Water, we have a wide range of purifying, collecting and carrying water. All the equipment we have chosen is tried and tested by our team. The stove, or burner, is made of heat-conducting brass that can last for a long time. It has a fire cover with a foldable handle so you can put out or regulate the fire without injuring yourself. The stove is paired with an aluminum alloy base that you can set up in several ways according to your needs. You can use it upward or downward and as a base or as a stand – it accommodates different pots and pans! What We Love The stove portion itself is possibly a bit over engineered in comparison to the burner. It's a three piece consisting of the pot stand, the burner holder, and a circle with holes in it that's supposed to "magnify the heat" but really just acts as a heat sink. Using it slowed down the boiling by a minute. It works passably as a wind screen for light breezes.
