However, Happiness for Beginners is based on the 2015 novel of the same name, written by Katherine Center. But that is a novel, which means the story is a work of fiction (in other words, it is not based on anything that happened in real life).

Thirty-two year old Helen’s life is stagnating after a tragic childhood and a recent divorce from a not so great guy. She’s going nowhere fast though she still has the meanest dog in the world that she does love. That’s about it. No matter your darkest day, take a moment to count your blessings and think of 3 positives that you experienced that day. It will change your focus! In fact, since reading this book, this is a practice my husband and I do every night! Who can’t use a little Zen-like peace?! They both act jealous: Jake over her accepting Mike's constant messages and Helen over his kiss with Windy, although it was during a game of Truth or Dare.

This is a wonderfully crafted story that by the end may just help you view your own life in a better light. Helen isn’t alone on this three-week long survival course. Nope. Her brothers best friend who happens to be ten years younger than her is going too. When she finds out that Jake will be there, she’s not excited in the least, but she comes around. Jake is in his early twenties and has had the biggest crush on Helen since the moment he met her. Jake is a wonderful hero and even though he can be a little dense at times, I still loved him to pieces. I truly loved the relationship Jake had with Helen’s brother Duncan. How he taught her to see him a different way. It was one of my favorite things about this one.Suddenly a hundred people were crammed into an apartment the size of a refrigerator. And one of them was me. Like with any romantic comedy, it’s nearly impossible not to root for Jake and Helen’s first real kiss. But Center keeps herself (and readers) busy by throwing in a few curveballs in the plot. For one, there’s Jake’s failing eyesight. There’s also the heavy secret Helen is hiding about her past. And there’s the fact that both Jake and Helen are way too proud to reveal their feelings for each other and take pains to avoid getting hurt.

I totally recommend this read specifically to women literature lovers, to those who are willing to try this genre and for anyone who’s looking for that perfect summer read! Jake was staring at me in the way he always stared at me when we were in the same room: mouth slightly open, as if he were not just looking at me, but beholding me, somehow. From anyone else, it would have been flattering. Dang, I looooove this author! I was incredibly happy reading her latest two books, but gosh, this may be the best of the three.With characters of the two-legged and four-legged variety that will completely capture your heart and turn you to mush, HAPPINESS FOR BEGINNERS by Carole Matthews really pulls the reader into the story and everyone at Hope Farm soon feels like family. While Lucas' dad can be frustrating at times in this story, the author deftly shows how grief is never the same for each person and my heart went out to Lucas so many times. The setting is superb and as it is based on a real-life place called Animal Antiks, it comes alive in a way which is beyond description.

Always a happy day when I am able to read a new book by Carole Matthews, and Happiness for Beginners was a joy to read. Windy tries to promote positive thinking. Everyone gets to know each other, Hugh sharing that he had been an aspiring actor but now sells insurance. When they are next alone again, Helen confronts Jake about his staring and hovering. I can't even count the number of times I thought to myself, Omigod! He ALREADY TOLD YOU he likes you! When he gave you that Pablo Neruda poem, that meant he likes you. When he kissed you and told you you were beautiful, that meant he likes you. When he told you he'd basically been obsessed with you for six years, THAT MEANT HE LIKES YOU. Not that difficult. But, of course, without this completely unrealistic fake conflict, there'd be no book at all. That's a problem. Adding Happiness for Beginners to my all-time favorites list.
