I found then by this experience that which no Philosopher ever dreamed of”: Knowledge, Doubt and the Moon’, Plague, Pastors and Lunatics: Religion and the Circulation of Knowledge panel, Society for Renaissance Studies 8th Biennial Conference, University of Sheffield, Oral presentation. 2018 In many ways, I could relate to the poems about finding peace within your body and I'm so incredibly happy to reach a point where I can read a poem like Wiley's and feel that it does apply to me. Like dang, if this is what growing old is, I'll absolutely take it. She writes about this so fantastically. I was trying to find something new to read and when I saw LGBT+ and poetry, I knew I had to read this. Eventually, I realized that I've heard Wiley's poems before in their spoken version so I was happy for a chance to read more of her work. Thanks to NetGalley for providing me with a copy of this in return for my unbiased review! Willie RJ. But in 2010, she was spurred to write in response to two incidents that highlighted negative treatment of fat people in the U.S. Rachel Wiley’s Revenge Body is a blue star blooming in the throat and you need this heat. Wiley guides through the intimacies of family, body, love, and health with an assertive tenderness, unabashed humanity, wit and bravado. Her poems brawl with bold rhythms, bolder forms, and gut-punching confession. Through these poems, Wiley teaches us to delight in the messiness of ourselves. All in all, this is a solid collection. It's engaging and truthful. Wiley's voice comes across as earnest and genuine. I absolutely recommend this if you're in the mood for some positive poetry. His Time was short, and yours is coming on; Old Oliver had his”: remembering and forgetting the civil war’, Bangor Conference on the Restoration, Bangor University, Oral presentation. 2019 We don't talk nearly enough about the way most of the "compliments" we give people about their bodies are actually not compliments.

In Fat Girl Finishing School, Rachel Wiley speaks about her experiences as a biracial, queer, fat woman. The collection focuses on self-love and self-acceptance, body positivity, the struggles and privileges of being a white-passing biracial person, queerness and relationships. In August 2012, Riley married Jamie Gilbert, whom she had met while they were both studying at the University of Oxford. It was announced in November 2013 that they were separating. [17] The split has been cited as an example of the Strictly curse. [18] She began dating her Strictly dance partner, Pasha Kovalev, soon after the show ended in December 2013. In May 2019, Riley announced that she was pregnant with the couple's first child. [19] On 28 June 2019, [20] Riley and Kovalev married in Las Vegas. [21] On 15 December 2019, Riley gave birth to a baby girl. [22] In April 2021, Riley announced that she was pregnant with the couple's second child. [23] On 5 November 2021, Riley gave birth to their second daughter. [24] Fat Girl Finishing School is truly for all the girls, no matter the color of their skin or the size of their thighs. The ones who have found love and those who haven’t. The ones who love girls, who love boys, or haven’t figured out who they love yet. The ones who own their truth or one day hope to. Searing, commanding, and relentlessly brilliant, Revenge Body is a visceral journey of how to come home to yourself after a history of hurt. This collection is truly genius. Rachel Wiley makes me want to be a better writer, and there are poems in here that will welcomely haunt me for the rest of my life. What a masterpiece, what a breathtaking dive.

In any case, I recently finished Wiley's first collection, Fat Girl Finishing School and liked it so I was excited to read more of her work. Right now, I feel like I can't read anything too heavy (thanks, Econ test) so this felt like a perfect thing to read in between studying. If you take one thing away from this review, let it be this. Rachel Wiley is a writer. Her words will fill your souls and make you feel seen. Maybe not the entire book, but in it there is a poem or two that will make you feel like she was writing it to you. Next to that will be one that I think is for me. And next to that is one that you will think is perfect for that friend who needs to feel seen too.

I really loved this collection of poems, which is both cheeky and says something deeper about the culture of fatphobia, dating, and identity. Nothing is Okay demands you to grab someone and read aloud to them.
