Names [ edit ] The stuffed giraffe known as Zarafa, in the Museum of Natural History of La Rochelle, France Geoffroy Saint-Hilaire, «Quelques considérations sur la Girafe», in Audouin, Brongniard et Dumas (dir.), «Annales des sciences naturelles», tome 11, Paris, Crochard, 1827, p.213 Giraffes live in nonterritorial groups of up to 20. Home ranges are as small as 85 square km (33 square miles) in wetter areas but up to 1,500 square km (580 square miles) in dry regions. The animals are gregarious, a behaviour that apparently allows for increased vigilance against predators. They have excellent eyesight, and when one giraffe stares, for example, at a lion a kilometre away, the others look in that direction too. Giraffes live up to 26 years in the wild and slightly longer in captivity. What do you think this book will be about? I think the book is about a giraffe that can only say rhymes because the title of the book rhymes. Create tactile images to support the story. You might use I Feel a Foot as inspiration. Think about the different textures of the different parts of the giraffe’s body as well as the shapes.

With its uniquely proportioned body, the giraffe is universally recognized as one of the most beautiful, elegant and graceful creaturesThese three books have been illustrated by the amazing, Kate Greenaway medal-shortlisted Poonam Mistry, who uses her unique style to bring the words to life, finding new things each time you read the stories.

She lived in the Jardin des Plantes. At night time the Kings granddaughter fed her apples and Atir whispered stories about home. Jane Ray's wonderful illustrations accompany the amazing true story of Zeraffa the Giraffe and her travels from her home in Africa to Europe, sent as a gift by the Ottoman Viceroy of Egypt to King Charles X of France in 1826. SATURDAY GUARDIAN – 19th April 2014 – ‘ The inherently exotic figure of the giraffe is richly celebrated in this incredible true story.‘ JULIA ECCLESHARE. THE LITTLE ANGEL THEATRE in Islington & OMNIBUS in Clapham put on the play ZERAFFA GIRAFFA, with a script by Sabrina Mafouz which ran for 9 weeks. It won an OFFIE (Off West End) for best children’s production. The first giraffe ever to set hoof in France nearly 200 years ago, confounded everyone with its strangeness. Was it a horned camel? A tall horse? Or a spotted zebra? Zeraffa got grumpy because she wanted to go home to Africa . Lots of people and birds came out to see her. In Paris they had a big party and they baked giraffe biscuits and the men were wearing tall hats and the ladies had long hair. I love this book because I have a nephew who is six months shy of five, and loves counting everything. He counts things that move, things we eat and everything in-between. He never gives up until he finishes his counting. A great book with a wonderful pull-out at the end. 4. Giraffes by Laura Marsh for National Geographic Kids Zeraffa Giraffa by Dianne Hofmeyr and illustrated by Jane Ray is based on a true story, a giraffe is sent as a gift from the ruler of Egypt to the King of France in 1826. A boy takes care of Zeraffa on her epic journey from Africa to Paris.

Quelques considérations sur la Girafe», in Audouin, Brongniard et Dumas (dir.), «Annales des sciences naturelles», tome 11, Paris, Crochard, 1827, p.211 Another Arabic homophonous word, means "charming" or "lovely one" was referenced by Allin as relating to the name, but it was later noted that both words are spelled with different Arabic letters. [10]The journey was happy because there were nice views of Luxor and the Sphinx and the kind people gave them food for the journey. This lower KS2 teaching unit is based on the book 'Zeraffa Giraffa' by Dianne Hofmeyr. It covers a range of KS2 reading and writing skills in a fun and engaging way. It's bedtime and Boo Boo Baby and giraffe are setting off on a journey together. As Boo Boo Baby bounces from animal to animal, she's scared by rhino and begins to cry. The animals manage to settle and comfort her. Bold illustration, rhyming text and a sweet central character help younger children identify. Designed on toddler-tough card with rounded edges. 9. Sophie La Giraffe and Friends published by Dorling Kindersley

Likewise, the ‘Pesci Parlanti’ (a series of board books from Italy) show how classic fairy tales can be retold supported by PCS without detracting from the story. The books are designed specifically to be more accessible to those with reduced communication skills, but the symbols are of interest and value to many. I have drawn a story map. In the story the giraffe was taken from Africa on a boat down the river. The person looking after the giraffe named her Zeraffa and gave her an amulet to keep her safe. On the river, they went past a sphinx and pyramids. They arrived in France and an inventor said Zeraffa could go in a hot air balloon to Paris but they walked instead. Everyone in the town looks out of their windows because they had never seen a giraffe before and they were very excited and everyone loved the giraffe.

Walton, Geri (21 October 2016). "Belle Africaine: The First Giraffe In France - Geri Walton" . Retrieved 8 August 2017. Jane Ray is an award-winning illustrator of over 70 books (some of which she has also written). She also has an interest in inclusivity and accessibility, including the value of communication symbols. Her picture book Zeraffa Giraffa is an ideal candidate to use for creating resources to support accessibility. This activity sheet outlines some of the many ways such a book could be used. What was your favourite part of the story and why? My favourite part of the story was actually thinking about what would happen next because marrying is so cute and I like a love story.
