Description

In 1927 the house was sold to a group of Methodist businessmen, who opened it as a hotel and holiday centre aimed at young Methodists. In the 1930s the single-storey extension on the east side of the castle was enlarged to create the "Music Room". After wartime use as a maternity home, the house reverted to its pre-war function, and it continues to be operated as an hotel by the Christian Guild. After establishing the mill at Cromford, Arkwright returned to Lancashire and took up a lease of the Birkacre mill at Chorley, which was to become a catalyst for the town's growth into one of the most important industrialised towns of the Industrial Revolution. Ann Marjorie Arkwright (b. 1919), born 1 March 1919; served in WW2 with Special Operations Executive; married, 3 January 1946, Lt-Col. Harold Covernton Selby MC (1912-95), second son of Dr. John S.E. Selby of Bozeat (Northants) and had issue one son and two daughters. Wright wasn’t the only artist who felt moved to depict this beguiling stretch of the Derwent Valley. Derby Museums’ collection features, among many others, a watercolour of Arkwright’s Mills by the artist William Day (1864–1807), made during his tour of Derbyshire in 1789, and a Derby Porcelain plate painted by Zachariah Boreman (1738–1810), showing a view of the mills that is almost identical to that seen in Wright’s painting. The distinctive landscape no doubt played a part in drawing these artists to this area, but it is tempting too to wonder how much of a part Sir Richard and his mills played in this. A combination of recent high profile lawsuits relating to his patents for various improvements to existing mill machinery, his wealth and ‘larger than life’ character, coupled with the success and impact of his factory system, must have made for an attractive subject for these artists and their audiences.Fitton, R. Rome reborn! Incredible interactive tool lets you explore temples, baths and gladiator arenas as they were in the ancient capital's heyday Charles Arkwright (1786-1850) of Dunstall Hall (Staffs), born 22 November 1786; educated at Eton and Trinity College, Cambridge (did not matriculate). JP for Staffordshire; High Sheriff of Staffordshire, 1849; married, 12 December 1811 at Morley (Derbys), Mary (1786-1858), daughter of Edward Sacheverell Wilmot-Sitwell of Stainsby but had no issue; died 28 December 1850 and was buried at Cromford; will proved 18 February 1851; With the expansion of the mill at Cromford, it soon became apparent that the existing population of the town would be inadequate to provide the labour needed for the scale of operations which Arkwright was planning. He therefore brought in workers from outside the locality, building a cluster of cottages near the mill to house them (he also built the Greyhound public house, which still stands in Cromford market square). Stuart Fisher states that the workers' homes are now considered to be "the first factory housing development in the world". [5] Although Sir Richard never lost a certain awkwardness in the company of his social superiors, his increasing wealth gave him a position in the county that led to his being knighted in 1786 and made High Sheriff the following year. In the 1780s he decided to invest some of his wealth in the building of a new mansion house at Cromford, although because of a catastrophic fire that destroyed the interiors while they were still being finished, it was not completed until after his death. Arkwright, Richard Alleyne (1884-1965). Elder and only surviving son of Frederic Charles Arkwright (1853-1923) and his wife Rebecca Olton, daughter of Sir John Gay Newton Alleyne of Chevin (Derbys), born 1 September 1884. Educated at Eton and Royal Military College, Sandhurst. An officer in the Coldstream Guards, 1904-19 (2nd Lt., 1904; Lt., 1906; Capt., 1914; Adjutant, Reserve Brigade, 1917); ADC to Governor of Trinidad & Tobago, 1909-10. JP for Derbyshire. He married, 16 April 1912, Marjorie (1888-1965), second daughter of Frank Hardcastle MP and had issue:

CELEBRATING 30 YEARS OF INSPIRING ENGINEERING TALENT

In 1777 Arkwright leased the Haarlem Mill in Wirksworth, Derbyshire, where he installed the first steam engine to be used in a cotton mill (this was used to replenish the millpond that drove the mill's waterwheel rather than to drive the machinery directly [6] [7]). Richard Arkwright's barber shop in Churchgate, Bolton was demolished early in the 20th century. There is a small plaque above the door of the building that replaced it, recording Arkwright's occupancy. Granville, a ‘boy’ of 30 when the show started, had long learned never to trust his parsimonious uncle. Alan is an enthusiastic member of the profession and applies this enthusiasm with drive and attention to detail.
