Modern harps also vary in techniques used to extend the range and chromaticism of the strings (e.g., adding sharps and flats). On lever harps one adjusts a string's note mid-performance by flipping a lever, which shortens the string enough to raise the pitch by a chromatic sharp. On pedal harps depressing the pedal one step turns geared levers on the strings for all octaves of a single pitch; most allow a second step that turns a second set of levers. The pedal harp is a standard instrument in the orchestra of the Romantic music era (ca. 1800–1910CE) and the 20th and 21stcentury music era. There are some experienced users who complain that they have to adjust their technique because of the position of the cover plates. In addition to the M364 models with 12 holes, there is also the Hohner Marine Band M365 14-hole harmonica. The general dimensions of the 12- and 14- hole Hohner harmonicas are a bit bigger than regular diatonic harmonicas. The M36401 and M36501 harmonicas (in the key of C) are pitched one octave lower than the standard 10-hole C diatonic. Thus, hole-4 blow is the same pitch as hole-1 on a regular diatonic harmonica in the key of C. The Marine Band M36408 and M36508 (in G) are similar to a usual G diatonic, having the higher end expanded. Some harps, rather than using pedal or lever devices, achieve chromaticity by simply adding additional strings to cover the notes outside their diatonic home scale. The Welsh triple harp is one such instrument, and two other instruments employing this technique are the cross-strung harp and the inline chromatic harp. The physics of bending are quite complex, but amount to this: a player can bend the pitch of the higher-tuned reed down toward the pitch of the lower-tuned reed in any given hole. In other words, on holes 1 through 6, the draw notes can be bent and on holes 7 through 10 the blow notes can be bent. Hole 3 allows for the most dramatic bending: in C, it is possible to bend 3 draw from a B down to a G ♯, or anywhere in between.

The vibrato might also be achieved via rapid glottal (vocal fold) opening and closing, especially on draws (inhalation) simultaneous to bending, or without bending. This obviates the need for cupping and waving the hands around the instrument during play.Williamson, Robert M. (2010). Thomas D. Rossing (ed.). The Science of String Instruments. Its colorful design helps to get kids interested, hence the reason why many consider this as a good buy for youngsters. It also helps that it sounds good for the price, as attested to by beginners and experienced musicians alike. Reliability is another major reason why many rate this highly, with reports of it still working fine even after being dropped multiple times. Del Mar, Norman (1983). Anatomy of the Orchestra. University of California Press. pp. 435ff. ISBN 978-0-520-05062-4. At the time of its release, many found the Hohner Special 20 to be comfortable to play, thanks to its unique recessed reed plates. This is designed I assume very much for a starter. It is in the key of ‘C’ and is designed to be quite versatile. It is a ten-hole harmonica with a traditional four-inch length and a chrome metal cover. And it has been made to be a cheaper version, so it has not been fitted with a wooden comb. Instead, it has a molded PVC plastic comb. Hohner 532BXC Blues Harp MS Modular System Diatonic Harmonica, C-major– Best All Round Blues Harmonica One respected source said he suspected this was actually made by the UK company Easttop Harmonicas. And that it just had a Fender logo slapped all over it. Another said it was actually made by Lee Oskar, a Danish harmonica player, in conjunction with a Japanese company Tombo Manufacturing. Again, with the Fender logo applied. It has long been associated with Blues music, but of course, it is much more of an instrument than that. Yes, it has formed an essential part of the Blues sound. But it has made its mark elsewhere — for example, Larry Adler.

Although it is reported by some beginners drawing on some of the holes were a bit challenging for them, many of them still find it easy to use when it comes to bending techniques. Now, it wouldn’t be Fender these days unless there was a little irritating mystery involved. Despite opinions to the contrary, a lot of their guitars and other instruments, including harmonicas, are made overseas, outside of America. Fender is sometimes slow to admit this. This particular model is made in China. a b Guerrero Briceño, Fernando F. (1999). El arpa en Venezuela. FundArte, Alcaldía de Caracas. ISBN 9789802533756. If you haven’t heard him play ‘Summertime.’ It is not just the Blues. Stevie Wonder, Neil Young, Bob Dylan, The Beatles, and Uncle Tom Cobley and all have used it. This harmonica also has a Doussie wood mouthpiece. The covers are stainless steel, and it has brass reed plates. You can see then that Hohner has used quality materials in the manufacture of this instrument.

Another method is to play in the key one whole tone above that of the harmonica. On a C-tuned harmonica, this would mean playing in the key of D. This is known as "slant harp" or "third position" playing, and results in the harmonica playing in dorian mode. This is much less intuitive as it requires the ability to bend notes completely accurately, and there are fewer useful chords available than in first or second-position playing. The technique offers many notes that are not achievable in the other positions without overblows, such as the blue note on the third degree, which may or may not be favorable depending on the circumstance. The bends available at the lower end of the instrument also make playing melodies in a D major scale relatively easy for those who have any semblance of proficiency at the bending technique, though most of the notes (all but the second and fourth, E and G) in the scale are on the draw, requiring great skill and strategy in exhaling, even more so than in crossharp. This design has since inspired other manufacturers to model their 10-hole harmonicas in a similar fashion. The first three positions cover the vast majority of harmonica playing, and these positions have names as well as numbers. They are:Yar-Shater, Ehsan (2003). Encyclopædia Iranica.
