Gamers who have followed the series’ single-player offerings have seen Call of Duty experiment with light RPG elements, aerial combat and real-time strategy before. For Call of Duty: Vanguard, each of the four leads are placed within standard franchise gameplay shooter loops with slight variations based on these experiments from previous games. This “something for everyone” approach doesn’t necessarily stand strong in any area though. With development led by Raven Software, Warzone is set to make Call of Duty history with a brand-new main map launching later this year, as well as a full integration between Call of Duty: Vanguard and Warzone. Warzone brings a New Map Isle of Man, Isle of Wight, Northern Ireland and the Scottish Highlands) may take longer to reach you.

For example, you can expect — and are encouraged — to explore reactive environments across the four maps within Champion Hill, breaking destructible barriers, doors, and other obstructions to create new sightlines or catch a would-be camper by surprise.

In Champion Hill, your squad — either a Duo (2v2) or Trio (3v3) during the Alpha — will compete in a round-robin deathmatch tournament against other squads. Your mission is to reduce all other squads’ life count to zero before your whole squad is eliminated. Ten hours of Double Experience Points (2XP), comprising of five hours of Double XP, and five hours of Double Weapons XP (2x WXP) for Call of Duty: Vanguard and Warzone, available as Double XP Tokens when the game launches. As with previous Call of Duty entries, Vanguard’s replay value lies in its online modes. Multiplayer and Zombies offer great competitive or co-op opportunities for players at launch, outside of post-release content. Regardless of problems presented in both, they’re generally fun experiences that make up for the disappointing single-player campaign. Sure, it’s more of the same, but that doesn’t mean that the “if it ain’t broke” approach can’t see refinements with the fresh coat of paint.

To play this game on PS5, your system may need to be updated to the latest system software. Although this game is playable on PS5, some features available on PS4 may be absent. See PlayStation.com/bc for more details. PlayStation 5: This works on the PlayStation 5 console with a disc drive. This version of the game will not operate on a discless PlayStation 5. For a compatible version with the discless PlayStation 5, choose the digital Standard or Cross-Gen Bundle. The higher you set the field of view, the more you can see, but it also zooms everything out. For the Field of View, the settings let you go all the way to 120, but this tends to leave you feeling zoomed out too far. It's all personal preference here, but I recommend testing somewhere between 90-100. Before the game launches on November 5, you’ll have the chance to play Multiplayer through the Call of Duty: Vanguard Beta, and for PlayStation players that chance is right around the corner.

A clever yet bumpy return to WWII

Performances from the lead cast including Chiké Okonkwo and Martin Copping alongside The Last of Us II alums Laura Bailey and Derek Phillips, who provide great performances with the wonky material presented to them. Actors Dan Donohue and Lord of The Rings’ own Dominic Monaghan lend the story some serious tension as the main antagonists of the single-player campaign. Add composer Bear McCreary’s cinematically epic score into the mix and this becomes one of the best Call of Duty games to date on the presentation side.
