About this deal

For both Klimt and Schiele drawing emerged as a highly expressive medium that was ideally suited to new ideas of modernity and subjectivity. While Klimt pushed the boundaries of the medium in his innovative preparatory drawings for his major figure compositions, Schiele took things a stage further by producing fully autonomous works of art that elevated drawing to a new, independent status. Both artists were master draughtsmen, and both renewed the European tradition of figuration, placing the human body and human destiny at the centre of their concerns. The resulting dialogue between these two outstanding Viennese modernists throws new light not only on their own work, but also on the changing role of drawing and its special significance for modern art. Schiele held his first exhibit at Klosterneuburg in 1908. After finishing his third year at the Institute, Schiele departed in 1909 to form the Neukunstgruppe with other unhappy pupils. The new group wasted little time, organizing many public exhibits across Vienna as Schiele experimented with new ways of pictorial expression, favoring distortion and jagged curves of structure and a more solemn palette than the more flamboyant and elaborate Art Nouveau style.

In 1906, Schiele applied to the Vienna School of Arts and Crafts, where Gustav Klimt had previously been a student. With his master dead and his new works achieving unprecedented success Schiele was poised to become the dominant artistic figure in Vienna, but only eight months later he too had succumbed to the flu. It is both tantalising and frustrating to imagine what might have been.He concentrated on portraits of people as well as pictures of himself. While he continued to deal with nudes in his later years, he did so in a more realistic manner.

Lots of readers have told me once they finish the book, they go off and they look for these women’s stories. And that, for me, is the dream. Klimt / Schiele: Drawings is a unique opportunity to see extraordinary drawings produced by both artists, considered to be some of the 20th century’s most important works on paper. Among them are Klimt’s sketches for his seminal Beethoven Frieze, and unflinching self-portraits by Schiele, which due to their delicacy will not see the light of day again for many years. In around 100 portraits, allegories, landscapes and erotic nudes, prepare to encounter these two icons of early Modernism at their most raw and revealing.Kronsteiner, Olga (5 October 2018). In the autumn of 1918, the Spanish flu pandemic reached Vienna. Edith, who was six months pregnant, died from the disease on 28 October. Schiele died only three days after his wife. He was 28years old. During the three days between their deaths, Schiele drew a few sketches of Edith. [19] Style [ edit ] From this vantage point, Schiele is very much a person of his era, since his sorrow and perplexity confirm our ubiquitous belief that there are no easy answers to the fundamental quandaries confronting us in the 21st century. Since Schiele’s tragic demise in 1918 at the age of 28, a cult following has galvanized around the wunderkind Austrian artist, whose avant-garde and open-minded depiction of the human body and sexuality was unprecedented in the realm of critically acclaimed art. Below, we explore the forces that inspired the power of Schiele’s oeuvre—one that still spellbinds artists and art lovers the world over today. At the tender age of 20, Egon Schiele broke radically with the history of figurative painting, portraying the psychological state of his subjects rather than their physical characteristics. This approach resulted in a deep well of subversive drawings and paintings that unmasked his sitters—including, and perhaps most significantly, himself—as angsty, emaciated, gender ambiguous, and sexually experimental beings.
