Finish: Medium in length with a good balance between sweetness and oak bitterness. Slight astringency. The unique taste of the Highland Park single malt scotch whiskey is useful. The range of whiskeys is flavorful and aromatic. The quality drinks offered by the brands are prepared with high-quality ingredients. Dragon Legend, despite sounding like it was named by an over-eager adolescent that enjoys tabletop role-playing games, is a rather satisfying dram that I have been enjoying more than I expected to. It’s more in-your-face than the core range but that isn’t necessarily a bad thing and there remains enough of a recognisable trace of the distillery character to please diehards. This has made the brand more readily available to the casual drinker as opposed to the more knowledgeable aficionado. Perhaps this is aligned with the whisky’s more commercially-styled Viking branding, which makes it appealing and accessible to more than just the golden liquid connoisseurs? For whatever reason, it’s now on the shelf.

On the nose: Dried cut grass, or a walk through a freshly baled field, maybe stopping of for a glass of sherry or red wine on the way. Some slight candy sweetness. The usage of five keystones in the production makes Highland Park whiskey stand out from the rest. The company uses the peats from the island of Orkney. These are woodless but high in heathery.

Highland Park’s standard 12 year old was the dram that launched my passion for whisky and I will always have a soft spot for it as a result. Having said that, I sometimes find their excessive reliance on the Viking stuff a bit of a turn-off. A wee story to go along with my dram is always welcome but it sometimes feels like the heavy-handed marketing obscures the quality of the liquid. For that reason it is a brand I have wandered away from over the years but recent tastes of Full Volume and Valfather showed me that I could still enjoy the spirit of this particular distillery. The weather condition of Orkney island is highly favorable in the maturation of the whiskey. The flavor notes of the whiskey are also infused with the character of fruits and spices. The company is obsessed with oak casks. They carefully select and cut European and American oaks. Their quality of cask contributes 80% of the final flavor to the whiskey. It also gives the natural color to the whiskey. The passion and skills of the brand ensures the Highland Park whiskey stands apart. They range whiskey aged from 10 to 50 years.

Highland Park ranges are one of the top brands of whiskey. Its distillery is located on Orkney Island. It is situated off the far north coast of Scotland. The brand offers a unique flavor profile. On the nose: A subtle sherry influence, and again a subtle smoke lingering, slightly spirity, but not spicy. After a while, the finish is when a little oak from the barrel comes in. It’s quite subtle which is actually a nice change as a lot of scotches have a very prominent oaky flavour. The taste is when the peat hits you but it’s nicely rounded off by the sweeter sherry notes or raisins. There’s definitely some of that highland savoury spice in there but it’s more mellow than say their 12 Year Old offering.Consumption of moderate amounts of whiskey is also very advantageous to health. It raises the amount of good cholesterol in the body that helps to lower the risk of heart disease. Highland Park is one of the few distilleries that follows the traditional method of floor malting. The brand uses the labour-intensive process of regular hand-turning barley before being kilned with Orkney peats. To say that Highland Park has been prolific over the last 12 months is rather the understatement. A veritable glut of new bottlings, from single casks, limited editions, travel exclusives and core range rebrands have been released with something to satisfy even the most hardened of HP enthusiast. In that regard, Highland Park Dragon Legend is rather the oddity as it seems to have sneaked out of Orkney with scarcely a whisper. Highland Park offers its range of whiskey in four categories. They are available in the core range, travel retail range, special editions, and archive.

The nose carries deep sherry, dried fruits and a bit of melon aromas. The peat is overpowered by the sherry cask notes however. For those that are put off by very smoked fragrances this is quite welcoming option. You are responsible for all activities through your account. Highland Park Distillery stands on a hill overlooking the town of Kirkwall – largest settlement and administrative centre of Orkney, an archipelago to the north of Scotland. You can also explore their range of Valkyrie, Valknut, Valfather, Fire edition, The Dark, Orcadian Vintage, and many others. In their range of archives, they offer series like hobbyists, shiel, Hillhead, queries, and many others. Whiskybase B.V. (“Whiskybase”, “we” or “us”, company details below) offers a whisky enthusiasts online platform that provides its members access to the most comprehensive, transparent and trusted resource of whisky bottles and allows and stimulates its members to contribute information about whisky bottles to the platform (“Service”). Nose: The sweet meets the peat as was promised. Honey, golden syrup, salted caramel and an assortment of dried fruits provide a warm sugary introduction. This is followed by the traditional aromatic, floral HP peat, which is indeed upped a notch for this release. It’s quite ashy and is supported by some damp earthy hay-like malts which provide depth. Light citrus, apple peels and a healthy dose of oranges make for rather the fruit orchard. Both smoke and sweetness are enhanced after a short period of resting. The addition of water is interesting – immediate orange barley water with a hint of ginger!
