I would have preferred a closer Rose-Oud connection from the start. How wonderfully tight Rose and Oud can be interwoven without much to do with each other was shown to me by Thirty Three from Ex Idolo, who plays in a completely different league when it comes to price per ml. When Romano Ricci was younger, he rebelled against everything his family stood for, but after the passing of his grandfather in 1988 and the family business being sold in 2000, he returned to his heritage. By 2005 Romano Ricci had his own company and launched his first project in 2006 called ‘ Juliette has a Gun.’ With the help of Francis Kurkdjian, who is one of the best modern perfumers in the perfume world today (he created scents for Dior, Jean-Paul Gaultier, Narciso Rodriguez and Elizabeth Arden), a range of five scents was created for this collection.

The creamy magnetic base will leave you aching for more each time you wear it. Midnight Oud in my nose gets more and more beautiful. It becomes a soft, warm, yet light rose-patchouli leather scent, very nice leather, just the way I like it. But strangely enough, it now suddenly reminds me of two fragrances I already own: Midnight Oud by Juliette Has A Gun opens up with a distinct, slightly smoky scent of birch tar, softened by the delicate, sweet aroma of rose. As this initial impression fades, the heart of the fragrance emerges, marked by the warm, earthy notes of oud, cedar, and patchouli, tinged with subtle hints of labdanum and papyrus. Here, the Bulgarian rose emerges stronger, contributing a floral sweetness that beautifully counterbalances the woodiness of the central notes. Knowing that birch tar appears in the pyramid, I now smell that too rather than really oud. Midnight Oud is an oriental fragrance of rose, oud, amber, musk, saffron, geranium and patchouli. Oud is the oil made from the resin of the Agarwood tree. It has been a staple of Middle Eastern perfumery for centuries. Review of Midnight Oud

Midnight Oud announces its presence in an elegant yet defiant manner from the first moment. Juliette Has A Gun Mmmm… is about daring to feel good. The notes in this fragrance are mixed into the perfect balance to have you feeling sexy, confident, and irresistible.

If what he means by that phrase is he wanted to make a less aggressive oud which would be more wearable by people who are not enamored of strong notes, I think he succeeded. The top of Midnight Oud begins with a pairing of bergamot and saffron. This is as strong a saffron note as I’ve come across recently and it is an excellent choice to start off an oud based fragrance. The saffron imparts a slightly dried grass and leather aspect to the beginning which adds a little bit of exoticism to the beginning. The heart begins with the appearance of the oud. The oud is very restrained here, of all of the oud scents out there it is most closely akin to the level of oud in M7. Midnight Oud's main players are supported by geranium, a “crisp rose” shape-shifter if ever there was, and a woody-amber accord that pipes up in the drydown. It's the drydown that's the letdown. The warm woody amber seems so...expected, so...so. I can still wallow for hours in a slightly smoky intensified Hippie Rose with a touch of Fashion Decree. The glamorous perfume for the modern woman. A confident spicy fragrance with complex woody-amber notes designed not to appease whiny men or show off at parties, but to scent you know your power is limitless. In Midnight Oud, the oud smells leathery. Like brand-new leather, along with saffron and crisp, bright rose. Even with the rose, Midnight Oud isn't particularly “floral”. It's the kind of rose that's more fruit and wine than actual flower. A fruit and wine rose in a box, because there's an appealing sweet cardboard dryness to this perfume.In heart and base it resembles enormously Hippie Rose by Heeley, my favourite patchouli rose leather scent. Midnight Oud is only warmer, sweeter and minimally smoky. But it's the kind of patchouli and that spicy warmth that sets it apart from the rather lighter and fresher Heeley that is found in the beguiling base of Fashion Decree by Atkinsons. I attribute this beguiling spiciness to guaiac wood, which I often like very much. All in all, Midnight Oud Fashion Decree is less similar to Hippie Rose, also because the guaiac wood is less in the foreground than Rose, Leather and Patchouli. Each of his scents is unique in the way that Romano Ricci has given them a personality. Each of us has a little "something" of one of these fragrances within us all.
